Another of the great ones passes on. Here's the Daily News article on line:

Joe Simon dead at 98: Created Captain America with Jack Kirby  - NY Daily News

Every show that I've been to in the last 5 years that Simon was supposed to be at he was always a no show. Wish I would have gotten the chance to meet him. RIP Joe.

I always wanted to meet Eduardo Barreto.

Being from Uruguay and having drawn some of my favorite Superman tales... I just wanted to tell the man thank you.

Man---two losses to the comics world. Sad, sad day. Sympathies go out to both gentlemen's families....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Never met either, but wanted to. Really liked Barreto's work, very clean. He did a few tales in Moonstone's Captain action comic not long ago. Didn't he do that Skull & Bones spy series for DC?

So sad to hear. A great legend in the comic world has left us. Be at peace dear Simon.

I think that was Ed Hannigan.

Barreto was a favorite of mine. He had the double whammy of illustrating many of my favorite comics, and also a series of He-Man books from Golden. He gave the He-Man tales a more serious Conan-like feel. Loved his run on New Teen Titans. The fact that he held his own following Perez and Garcia-Lopez says tons about the man's work.

Joe Simon...what can you say? One of the great creators of comics. Not only did he co-create one of comic's greatest and most enduring characters, he co-created a whole genre in the romance comic! His list of accomplishments is staggering.

But hopefully he DID get to see Cap make it to the big screen. In a bigger way than ever!

Simon is interviewed on the Blu-Ray of the Cap movie, so I think he did get to see it. Apparently he was too ill to make it to the premiere, but his grandchildren did and are shown on-screen.

Longtime Artist Eduardo Barreto Has Died - Comic Book Resources
Wow, Barreto was young. I couldnt place his name with his work at first but I remember his stuff from way back.
Simon was one of the pioneers of the industry. A mighty blow for the profession and CB fans alike.

It's sad to see the Golden Age artist's passing. Jerry Robinson was just recent and now two more. They broke the ground for all the great artists that were to come later.

Just to clarify, Barreto was only 57. He started working in comics in the 80s, mostly known for his DC work. He did quite a bit of Superman work directly before the Crisis, and then a long run on NTT before working on mostly special projects.
