I just watched it, thought it was a BLAST! Great action Flick...and Momoa really reminded me of John Buscema's Conan. He was a good choice for the part.
I enjoyed it, and I feel where The Bat's coming from - the flick reminded me of an old school Roy Thomas/John Buscema story. If only Momoa had black hair and a Buscema style haircut...
As to McGowan's sorceress, not bad, she chewed the scenery with the best of 'em, but the girl playing the younger version of her character when Conan was a kid... that girl was downright sinister and you could FEEL the evil she was exuding.
Ron Perlman as Conan's father - perfect casting. Freeman's narration I could take or leave - didn't have the grimness or heaviness I was expecting. We needed Mako.
"It's sad that governments are chiefed by the double tongues. There is iron in your words of death for all Comanche to see, and so there is iron in your words of life. No signed paper can hold the iron. It must come from men. The words of Ten Bears carries the same iron of life and death. It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life... or death. It shall be life."
I still feel that part of the problem is that Conan was such a HUGE inspiration for thousands of generic barbarians that even a dead-on accurate interpretation would still FEEL generic, since all the tropes have been usurped by others over the last 80 years.
What you said. A young guy I work with was saying how it seemed like a rip-off of this movie and that movie, and I had to explain to him those items he was pointing out (killing a Lovecraftian horror, f.ex.) was already Conan's territory decades before those movies he was comparing it to were even made.
Also, don't think I hate Morgan Freeman, guys--he's phenomenal--it's just that his voice is so distinctive, it kind of put the focus on him, rather than the actual narration. It would be the same if Patrick Stewart (f.ex.) were doing it.
I know I'm going to get attacked by the Arnold groupies in here...but Momoa made a way better Conan...he looked the part, he acted the part...he was a baddass.
Arnie on the other hand...was kinda of a bumbling Conan...half-arse comedic...and slow as hell...the guy moved in slow-motion...Momoa would easily kill him in a sword fight...for Momoa was lightning quick with that sword.
I don't think the movie was perfect...but I think the character of Conan himself was.

He's likeable (so is Arnold), as well--even if there are no Conan sequels, I hope the guy has a great career. I haven't seen Game of Thrones, but all I hear about it is how kick butt it is and how Momoa rocked it. Good for him!
Momoa has a very interesting and unique look to him...you can't quite know what his ethnic background is...he's like a mystery...and I think that might get him some cool roles down the line.
I definitely want to see this. It reads like the Mamoa/Arnie debate is much like the Reeves/Reeve thread. Both made their statement with the character and both have good qualities apparently. Arnold's Conan made his mark with pure brute force where Jason looks like more of a skilled warrior.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.
If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.
loved this movie! morgan freeman as the narr. kind of took me out of it, just doesn't strike me as a barbarian storyteller and something about music seemed off, but the acting and characters blew me away! but on a big screen and 3-d would have been too much. cann't wait to see what they do next.
>Theres been far worse adaptations the last few years
....like the "Kull" movie, starring Hercules. *shudder*
Kevin Sorbo as Kull was a really bad casting decision.
Up there with Ralf Moeller as Conan in that truly awful (and thankfully short-lived) Conan TV series.
By way of contrast, James Purefoy as Solomon Kane was a good casting choice.

Yeah.... 'specially since Kull in the books is a neandethal-kinda guy.

Yeah. He was an okay barbarian; but not Conan. 'Course, neither was Arnie.... and it looked like the tv show wanted something more Shwartzegenerian than the actual books.
Now I'm looking forward to the Morgan Freeman narration. That sounds pretty funny. Here's what I envision, in Freeman's voice obviously...
"Now I don't know about you folks, but I'd have taken a mace to his skull. I'd have turned his skull into a cereal bowl and then filled it with the sweet goodness of Cimmerian Toast Crunch."
I may grab this from Redbox this afternoon.

This had me laughing much harder than it should. "Cimmerian Toast Crunch." Well done, sir!
