Goodbye Batman Brave and the Bold

The Godzilla clan did tonight what we usually do on Fridays. We went for pizza and after we had ordered, we walked next door to shop at our comic store while our pies baked. My boys, 7 and 5, were dissappinted to discover that the new issue of Super Dinosaur won't be out until next week. But finding a couple of Art's Super-Pets books quickly made them forget. With new reading material in hand, we enjoyed a great dinner and then came home to watch Cartoon Network and Batman.

We have watched Brave and Bold as a family every Friday night it's been on since the very first episode. It's been the prefect blend of action, comedy, and fun, especially for my kids who were very little when the show started. Tonight's episode was excellent. As usual, the comedy was spot on and the injokes for us nerds were great. But most of all, it seemed to be a real love letter to families like ours who sit and watch the show together each week. That really caught me off guard. Watching my kids eat up Gorilla Grodd turning people into bananas with his ray guy and having the show acknowledge that joy and our sharing of the experience was very heart felt.

Some may feel it lame, but it honestly brought tears to my eyes. I have loved being able to share this version fo Batman with my kids.

So cheers to Batman Brave and the Bold. A show that demonstrated that superheroes can be fun as well as serious. A show that men, women, boys and girls, moms and dads could enjoy. You will be missed in my house.

We will definately watch the Christmas episode again this year.

My DVR is practically filled with B&B episodes that I can't bring myself to delete. I share your sentiments.

Paul Dini just hit it out of the park with this episode, didn't he? It's a shame it's over,I would have loved to see him write more episodes.

The end of Brave and Bold ends the Fri night tradition for our family as well.

I'm sad that they ended it on such a lackluster episode. Its like they had to cram in so many pop culture references the episode become confusing. I gave up trying to explain them all to my 10 yr old.

I loved all the jumping the shark, Happy Days, silver-age, Chuck Jones, Porky Pig in-jokes.

Loved the wrap-up party with all the characters mingling and the crew tearing the set down.

Tucker and Dini and everyone involved really delivered.

The entire series delivered on so many levels. I hate to see it go, but glad the quality lasted up to the very end.

Hope the Green Lantern series can carry on Warner's super hero legacy with pride and that the Young Justice show steps it up a notch.

The episode itself was OK but that finale wrap-party brought a tear to my eye...Very sad

It was bizarre watching Ambush Bug trying to convince Batman that punching him in the face would help keep vewiers and as soon as Batman started doing it my kids screamed with laughter because Batman had punched Ambush Bug in the face.

The final scenes were actually touching, and Tucker and co. actually managed to get through to my inner 11 year old, who would have been very upset to know Super Friends was officially canceled.

I really enjoyed all the in-jokes, but I did have to explain almost everyone of them to my son, who is very knowledgable for his age. He knew what jump the shark meant, but Ted McGinnley threw him for instance. This season the show seemed to be going more "meta" (which is apparently the new word de jour on line), and this was the culmination of that theme. I don't think you can get more meta than this!!!

I am really sad to see this go. As I've said before, I feel like this show is the last vestige of the old, fun DCU. The DCU I love has been on life support for 26 years, and DC recently pulled the plug. B&B is like the loving relative who stuck it out and stayed by it's bedside until the end. And now it's gone too.

That being said, I would SO watch that Batgirl series! From the use of Firefly and Bab's design it looked to be based on the Batgirl: Year One mini-series from several years ago. I know I shouldn't fall into the trap of hating on a show before I see it, but the Batgirl series looked more interesting to me than "Beware The Batman" does at the moment.

I'll be sorry to see this show go--although it was at times uneven, I grew to love it:

                    --Batman '66 homages
                    --Doom Patrol
                    --Marvel Family & Sivana
                    --NPH as Music Meister: Awesome-sauce!!!
                    --Stephen Root's Penguin

                    I'm collecting it on DVD.
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

I liked the show from the start, but the first episode that truly impressed me was the Christmas-themed episode with the Red Tornado. Warner's should group it with the JL Christmas episode and the two Batman animated series episodes that were Christmas-themed on its own DVD.

Loved the fact that the show honored the JSA so much. Never believed I'd see the JSA in an animated show, much less all the other characters that received love from the series.

                      And Aquaman was a hoot.

My 9 yr old daughter was absolutely thrilled with the opening team-up: Batman & Abraham Lincoln vs. Steampunk Booth! Since we visit the Gettysburg area frequently, she's got a good background for the Civil War. She must have said " If only it was that way in real life!" about six times!

Okay, I just now found out that Henry Winkler was the voice of Ambush Bug!!! CN airs the credits so small you can't read them, even on a big screen TV!!!

                            Here's more from James Tucker:

I caught Heny's voice immediately. I was very pleased with the episode and seeing Alan Scott at the wrap a party was great. I am saddened at it's loss.

Loved the riff on the toy's ... take that Kenner.

I think that I am close to James Tucker's age he put so many precriss elements into the show and iconic characters you never thought would make animation in the life of the show (metal men, JSA, Doom patrol, silver age GA, ted cord blue beetle, Charleston capt atom, sword of the atom ray palmer) Bravo James Bravo
