They were never intended to be on DVD's reducing the artwork down the detail in the artwork is lost and it will blend with the hundred of other DVD's that are battling for your attention.
So re-designing it to be simple and eye catching is more what they're after.....
Yeah - I understand why they think it works - but my main point was that it's also influenced the way movie posters are made now.

As far as DVDs are concerned I'm not even totally convinced that the reduction of size warrants complete overhauls in the designs every time - I think it has to do more with quick and sloppy digital approach to design and marketing.

How does ANY disc stand out when the all look the same? Books have varied and unique designs - cassettes and CDs didn't radically change their approach to design from the reduction in size. The premium DVD/Blu-ray brand Criterion Collection has always created brilliant and unique designs in the opposite direction of these photoshop design trends.

So I'm not convinced that size is the main reason - I think it has to do more with the tools (Photoshop) and the lack of skill necessary to operate them (budget) and the quick turn around time. Quick, cheap and sloppy.

Ha - as a coincidence Ebert tweeted this link today. Hilarious stuff:

Oh No They Didnt! - thirteen movie poster trends that are here to stay and what they say about their movies

I'm not sure "Walk the Line" deserves to be under #2. Personally I think that's a pretty distinct poster.

I also think a couple of the posters under #10 are actually pretty unique.

Yup great points made. It just maybe a combination of both....I agree that yes some seem a bit rushed especially when they want to put them out for the holidays as that extra gift.....

Yeah - probably more than one factor for sure - and yeah, the holiday rush sloppiness too.
