Yeah - I understand why they think it works - but my main point was that it's also influenced the way movie posters are made now.
As far as DVDs are concerned I'm not even totally convinced that the reduction of size warrants complete overhauls in the designs every time - I think it has to do more with quick and sloppy digital approach to design and marketing.
How does ANY disc stand out when the all look the same? Books have varied and unique designs - cassettes and CDs didn't radically change their approach to design from the reduction in size. The premium DVD/Blu-ray brand Criterion Collection has always created brilliant and unique designs in the opposite direction of these photoshop design trends.
So I'm not convinced that size is the main reason - I think it has to do more with the tools (Photoshop) and the lack of skill necessary to operate them (budget) and the quick turn around time. Quick, cheap and sloppy.
