i've dealt with a neighbor's barking dogs issue, and believe me, it's no picnic. After two or three hours of non-stop NOISE, it's easy to go off the rails. Polite conversation at first, then not-so polite, letters, police...it ruined a good part of my life. It actually got to the point where I hated being at home. Finally, after 4-5 police calls, they arrived while the beast was howling and observed the neighbor ignoring it while she puttered in her yard. A $500 fine & promise of higher next time finally put an end to it.
Too bad there isn't any information on exactly what happened with The Dude, but I've met him at cons and he was always real nice. Terrific artist, goes without saying. I hope it works out ok for him.

From everything I've heard, and directly from people that have worked with him, Steve Rude lives up to his name. He gets none of my money.

Steve Rude the Dude I read over the Shooter story. It's pretty out there. The first time I made it to the Marvel offices was years after I'd met Paul Gulacy, when I hitchhiked out to see him at his house in Youngstown, Ohio. When I met Shooter for the first time Paul had just made the move to West New York, New Jersey, near the Hudson River. I made an appointment with Shooter during this time, and he was very helpful in looking over by work. He went over basics with me by using a Captain America vs. the Human Torch comic as an example. I listened carefully, since I was raised to be polite when I meet people for the first time. Shooter said I should focus on basics instead of doing fancy things like Paul Gulacy did.

After that appointment, I hung around the Marvel offices hoping to get more feedback on my work. Shooter did eventually shoo me out, politely as I recall, when he saw me still hanging out in the halls--I was with Joe Rubenstein at the time, as Joe had just recently been hired at Marvel and was in the middle of inking a Rom cover, which was fascinating to watch. When Shooter saw me still hanging around he said, "You still here? People are busy here and need to get back to work."

Not sure which one's closer to the truth, but the Dude was already an established artist when Shooter was fired from Marvel (1986 or 87?), so that part about him coming back to show off his stuff after Shooter was fired sounds a bit fishy.

I've never met Rude, but his artwork is gorgeous. I understand he has been in some financial straits lately. I know times are tough, but you'd think an artist of his caliber would have a permanent meal ticket.

He apparently sink years of time, and most of his money into trying to get the Nexus animated series off the ground. I think the test footage he financed has been posted here before. As a result, he nearly lost hs house. Hs recent forays into self
Publishing with Nexus and The Moth have not been so hot either... It's a tough market to crack these days. According to his Facebook page, commissions are his main source of income these days.

Being a great, even brilliant, artist is only one slice of the pie. It's also important to be on time and be easy to work with. If no one wants to work with you, it doesn't matter how good your art is.

I never met him, But I know Adam hughes ex girlfriend well and she thought he was a big dick.......the man really is a good artist though......his FB page is sad seeing him trying to sell his stuff to get by.....

^Yeah, that's what I was kind of implying. I don't know the guy, and haven't met him at cons either, so I didn't want to say his personality is getting in the way of his getting work. But it's about the only reason I can think of, other than just being incredibly slow.

I don't think he's ever been on a regular Marvel or DC title....I'm sure Anthony would know.....but I've loved the stuff he's done for them. maybe his personality does get in the way and that's a shame. he does have the skills and his art is fabulous......

I'm a big fan of his World's Finest mini with Dave Gibbons. Rude was one of the first guys to really go back to the Shuster and Kane looks for Superman and Batman. He wanted an even more obvious Kane Batman, but DC made him tone it down to a Mazzuchelli/Kane hybrid. His Joker was uniquely weird. Jerry Robinson Joker on crack.

His art is gorgeous, but I came away less than impressed with the guy from interactions at two conventions. I don't think he liked my Southern accent.

I can see how conventions might be torture to creators, but I'd be much more likely to buy something off his website today to help him out had he been a bit more gracious at those cons back in the late 1990s. Impressions last.

I don't know anything about his reputation but fantastic artwork. The one of Steve Jobs is amazing.
