Ty--I asked my shop about the TPB last summer & just got a blank look... They had a book of Green Arrow SA reprints which I assume is comparable, however
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.
There are also 3 volumes in the b/w SHOWCASE series reprinting the 1960s Aquaman from his own series. That would be similar to the GA book you mentioned, 500 pagers.
I think with the team of Johns and Reis, Aquaman will likely do very well---at least for a while. I just don't know if he's the kind of character who can sustain his own title for an extended period of time. Depends on what kind of mythology Johns creates (or recreates) for the character...
Looking forward to it, nonetheless....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.
This is the title I'm looking forward to the most based on their work on brightest day. Hopefully the mythology they are reinventing with Mera and her people will stand up when more is revealed. Particularly when it comes to Reimagining Blck Manta as something other than the Malcolm X of the sea.
Ocean Master also needs some revisiting. Luckily Johns is best when he is redoing villains.
There's only a couple of things I don't like about the Death of a Prince TPB:
They didn't reprint any of the covers for these issues, just the contents. Ok, granted, none of these covers are considered to be "classic", but it's Aparo artwork and even the Showcase volumes reprint covers, and those are done on the cheap by design. I would have settled for less glossy paper if it would have made room for the covers.
The other thing I don't like is that the artwork has been recolored. It's nothing major and I probably couldn't even articulate why I don't like it. But I can say that I have several of the original comics that are printed here and I like the coloring much better. I think the only recoloring job I think I really like is what they did on the Dave Stevens Rocketeer reprint book, the new colors really made his artwork pop.

As much as I love the 70's stuff, I can't help but roll my eyes when I get to that part in 452. More of DC's lame attempt at relevance. But I think the reason I really dislike it is because to me Black Manta is kinda like Darth Vader. When you don't know what's under the mask, it adds to the mystery and threat of the character. When you take the mask off and see that it's a withered up old guy or and angry black guy, it really takes away from the character. But I guess that genie is out of the bottle now.
I've got mixed feelings about this new series. It's the only one of the 52 that I'm going to buy, and I really like how much Johns has brought him back to something resembling the Silver Age character. But that 4 page preview that was posted awhile back.....eesh, the dialogue seemed pretty juvenile, like the high school locker room talk some have referenced in the new Justice League book.
I'll give the book a shot, but I think I'm more and more coming to the realization that the Aquaman I love is the one from the 60's and 70's. That's what the Superfriends Aquaman as well as the merchandise from my childhood was based on. I'm becoming more resolved to stick with collecting and reading that. We'll see.
Brightest day pretty much gives you the basics of what to expect given that the creative team on the ongoing worked on the aquaman bits of that crossover.
The most intriguing parts is how Black Manta is now "family", with the reveal that he had aligned himself with Mera's people and might be some kind of pawn in their schemes. Also, Mera has been quite an interesting character lately as well between her turn as a Red Lantern during Brightest Day, and the reveal she was originally sent to kill aquaman.
I,ve never really followed Mera's storyline too closely, it would be neat to see how they Retconned her storyline from the original sixties and seventies comics.
