I imagine Lee will fall victim to deadlines eventually, but who will kick a VP off a book for incompetence? -
Perez leaving a book after 6 (not 1) issue doesn't sound unusual to me. That's an arc. Who knows if DC is putting him on something else he'd rather do, or it could be associated with the tight deadlines DC instituting. Perez is a great creator, but since the 1980s he's never been considered fast. I mean really when I read Perez would be doing Superman, the first thing that popped in my head was "how long will that last."
Or it could be Perez was PO'ed about some of the changes made to the art in the Superman book, but he was only responsible for the breakdowns, so I doubt that is really it.
I like the fact Jurgens is going to be involved with Superman again and Giffen has done good work, too.
As for the creative shuffling, DC said it planned to keep a strict monthly deadline on the books, which is something folks have been complaining about for years. Unless the company does step in and shuffle on new talent when one of the creators drops the ball, how can DC be expected to keep the monthly schedule.
Some employees will only be disciplined when they are forced to be. That might cause some creators to flock to other companies, but on DC's part, it needs creators that can deliver on time.
I never had too much of a problem with late books until company continuity got so tied together that one late book started messing with the storyline or affected when another title that was on time could be published for the sake of the storyline.
But, I do like the fact DC is getting serious with their deadlines. Now, if it's true that Didio and other editors ask for so many changes or tweaks that deadlines can't be kept, then that might be a problem.
What I did think was funny is that the ad on the back of the Superman No. 1 is for Hotwheels and it features the traditional look of Superman, which I still feel is vastly superior to the crappy new costume.Last edited by madmarva; Oct 1, '11, 2:52 PM.Leave a comment:

As it stands now Giffen and/or Jurgens will be having a hand in "Superman", "Justice League International", "Green Arrow", and "Omac"...Leave a comment:

Jurgens and Giffen have worked consistently for DC for 30 years(!). They have gone to other companies, but always kept one toe in the DC pond. For some reason, they never really left.

>Once the gimmick cools off, your left with just the stories.
Hence the constant quest for new gimmicks.

Not a bit surprised. Once the gimmick cools off, your left with just the stories. And THAT is what keeps these going. DC could very well regret this move.Leave a comment:

What the heck is going on with all of these creative changes already? The latest:
Boy, Giffen and Jurgens are cleaning up lately on assignments...Newsarama has confirmed with multiple sources that George Pérez is off as writer and breakdown artist of Superman.
The new creative team as of Superman #7 will be writer Keith Giffen and Dan Jurgens on layouts and/or pencils. Pérez may remain on the title as finisher/inker.Leave a comment:

Found my first two "not picking up the second issue" with Justice League Dark and Firestorm. Picked up Batwomen due to the rave reviews but will also not be continuing with that. On the other side liked Superman & Batman: The Dark Knight. Wonder Woman is borderline but I'll pick up issue #2.Leave a comment:

I finished reading Teen Titans last night and I really enjoyed it. I'm interested in seeing what they do with some of the origins of the established characters.Leave a comment:

Taking a step back to look at everything overall in the relaunch, there really isn't anything new or original or unique in the line-up. Malibu Stacy simply has a new hat, which I think speaks to the fact that the biggest changes are cosmetic and the biggest complaints are around bad writing or art. Which again is nothing new. It's not a bad thing unto itself if you are just a superhero fan, and I'm certainly one myself.
For me the biggest shame in all of this focus on the superhero revamp is the fact that Wildstorm has ceased to exist and Vertigo has been down sized. Which really lessens the true venues of diverse content from the DC corporate entity.
In this climate, what would be the chances that American Splendor would have been picked up, let alone been given the opportunities to have graphic novels published by the company with the best track record for promoting and getting those books into the hands of readers?
After Archie Goodwin jumped from Epic, Marvel has never really been interested in breaking new material and readership ground like that (for very long at least).
So what are the chances that an OGN like BK Vaughn's Pride of Baghdad is given a shot by Didio and co in this climate? Let alone any promotional consideration if it does slip in? Or Road to Perdition, or History of Violence, just to name a couple of others where the "corporate synergy" was badly fumbled in the wake of two successful film adaptations.
Do the DC Powers That Be really have the instincts to nurture slow burn sleeper hits like Sandman or Fables? Because that was where th real breakthroughs in female readership at DC came from, and that kind of material seems scarcer. Hopefully, despite Didio's new oversight of Karen Berger's former Vertigo kingdom, things like Preacher or Transmetropolitan or Y the Last Man are still possible and given the chance to find their creative legs and readership audience.Last edited by samurainoir; Sep 29, '11, 10:34 AM.Leave a comment:

Well, unless Kory was off sleeping with everyone off panel, I just don't interpret it that way. She's featured in a book with two male leads and is ready to sleep with both. She shared a book with at least 4 male leads for years, and only had sex with one. And besides, if she was going to just sleep with random people and not care who it was, she would have made poor Changeling/Beast Boy a man by NTT#2. The poor kid begged for it practically every issue.>I think the key there is "sometimes physically".
....with the caveat "many people." It's the sort of plausible deniability that's always bothered me about DC and Marvel.... if you think about it, BOTH of us are right. Or rather, COULD be; depending on how we want to look at it.
DC can do what they want with the characters. They own them. But I don't have to agree with what they do with them, and I don't have to buy it, or buy into it. And I won't.
I'm just going to keep my mouth shut about this from now on. It's clear many of you are enjoying this new approach, and that is your right.

I enjoyed Nightwing #1. Glad he's Nightwing again.
Batman and Robin #1 surprised me. Enjoyed that too.
Batman #1 I've read twice now. Not only because of Greg Capullo's art, but the story was good as well. Great cliff hanger!
Catwoman was more adult then I would have thought but I still enjoyed it.
Birds of Prey wasn't bad either.Leave a comment:
