Yup! Burgess IS the ONLY Penguin just as Julie Newmar is the ONLY Catwoman. Even though their performances were on a "campy" TV show they are still today the best performances of those characters that all others are judged against. That's saying something.

I've not been thrilled with any screen adaptation of Batman, but I do think, having rewatched the Burton films recently after a long hiatus, that they hold up surprisingly well. The Nolan films are just as flawed as the earlier ones, only in a different way.

Carrey's Riddler was no different than Carrey's Grinch or his Liar Liar guy or countless other characters he does that have the same schtick....

The only better Riddler (back then) would have been Robin Williams
I hope when you say back then...you mean the 70's...because that's the last time he was thin...lol.

Also...you would've needed a ton of electric shavers in prepping Williams for the part...as the dude is hairier than an POTA gorilla solider...

I'd say typically, Actors DON'T win Academy Awards for Comic book movies. So no, he probably wouldn't have won had he not died.

That said, I feel he should have one the Academy Award either way...because he was absolutely MAGNIFICENT in the role! Heath totally owned the part like nobody ever will again!

    Agreed x 4..

I wasn't impressed with Ledger at all. He played a very convincing psychotic villain, and it was interesting figuring out how the 'wheels' worked in his head for his justifications, but he was no Joker.

I'm not just talking a lack of flamboyance here; I'm talking style, methods, poise. Ledger portrayed Joker not as some 'master villain' that we know and admire, but as a conniving street thug. Which is fine if that's the artistic license film-makers wish to take style-wise, but it also limits the potential for a truely memorable villain. Essentially, I'm agreeing with Werewolf's rationale.

The Joker most of us know delights in being over-the-top when committing crimes and confounding Batman, which both Nicholson and Mark Hammill really do well.

In my opinion, I don't think so.

I remember when it happened. His death brought out the absolute worst in a lot of people online. There were groups of people that built him and his portrayal of the Joker up to some type of morbid almost mythical pseudo religious state. I found it creepy and cult like. Twisted idol worship taken to the ugliest lunatic extreme. It made my skin crawl. I avoided the movie for a long time because of it. I still cannot stand the "Why so serious?" meme.

He was a good actor and played a believable psychopath in The Dark Knight. The character was a psychopath in dirty smeared clown make up. It worked in context of the "Nolenverse" but the character wasn't the Joker to me. Again, he was a good actor and good in the part in context of the "Nolenverse." But without the tragedy of his death I don't think his portrayal would be built up to this near mythical state.

Mark Hammill - Captures ALL the charactistics of The Joker in just his voice! Who'd've guessed it from a Jedi Knight...?

Heath Ledger - Again, a good psychopath, but not really a Joker-y psychopath.

No, He wouldn't have Won the Academy Award. That was the Academy basically honoring a talented actor with the award....had Nicholson died when he did the Joker he would have won also......

I think, in order of preferences, my Joker's would have to be:

Caesar Romero - Maybe he wasn't as homicidal as the current Joker is, but he nailed the Joker's persona to the wall.
