MY VIEW ON NOLAN'S BATMANVERSE [Part The First]
No, you are NOT alone in your "meh"ness towards the Nolan take on Batman's universe.
Let me preface by saying, I absolutely LOVED Memento. I thought it was freaking brilliant and I could watch it a dozen times over and still catch something new every time. I also enjoyed Insomnia and The Prestige----both good films.
I was therefore tickled s**tless when I heard he was taking on the Batman franchise.
I enjoyed BATMAN BEGINS. I liked that someone gave us a deeper look into the origins of the character and showed us his training overseas. I loved that they introduced Ras Al Ghul into a Batman movie finally and that they had a good actor to pull it off. I thought the Tumbler was good for a start as the Batmobile as it is probably something that would happen and it would eventually get sleeker as time went by. I did not particularly care for the suit in BB, especially the fact that the cape looks too set apart from the rest of the outfit; looks like he pulled out a piece of velour fabric and attached it to this body armour suit; the two don't mesh. Batman's cape is as much a part of his character as Spawn's is his; it's what allows him to melt into and blend with the shadows. The guy who did BATMAN: DEAD END knew this and used it well. And I, too, was not real happy with the extreme "raspy" voice Bale put on when he went into the Batman persona. If you have the technology to have all this other stuff, why wouldn't you have a small device attached to the neck of the cowl to subtly alter your speaking voice without making you sound like you've got a bad case of laryngitis?
Part II coming shortly....
