Nostalgia is dead

Nah, the MAJORITY of 80s cartoons were nothing more than glorified commericals for toys...He-Man, GI Joe, Voltron, Care Bears, Monchichis, Rubik the Amazing Cube, Rainbow Brite, Transformers, Thundercats, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...Need I continue?

Heck even Super Friends got in to the act with the Galactic Guardians line-up featuring characters from the Super Powers line...

It's really hard to crap on an era if you weren't a kid at the time. I think kids in the 80s had it pretty sweet eventhough I have no nostalgia for the properties myself..

I occasionally read books obviously written by baby boomers that treat the 70s as some sort of "bleak period" compared to their precious 1960s. It's all relative to the time you wore short pants, preference is preference.

The early ninties to me looked really uninspired however, like they ran out of steam on the 80s formula. I can't think of a really memorable brand in that time other than Batman.

Yeah, they supported toys. No one argues that. But they were all very well done, well written and had serious talent behind them. He-Man, She-Ra, GI JOE, Transformers, Thundercats, Jem, Real Ghostbusters, etc. were damn good cartoons.

I agree entirely. The things you grow up with, be it television, toys, music, are the soundtracks to your life. And when you see those familiar faces, that connects with a very place. This is where nostalgia is born. And it's different for each generation. Because of that, I respect everyone's choices for those moments and love hearing about them. The items of endearment may differ, but the enthusiasm is the same. And that's intoxicating to hear.

The 90's had some great cartoons too. Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Eek! the Cat!, Spider-man (even with all the mullets), Men in Black, The X-Men (well it was hit or miss for me). Then of course all the Bruce Timm DC stuff. Darkwing Duck and some of the other Disney stuff.

I wouldn't place Captain Planet among the good cartoons of the 90's. Or anything made by Dic really. When GIJoe switched over to them from Sunbow it was a terrible fluorescent nightmare.

I agree. I really liked Batman, Superman and Eek the Cat. The 90s had its share of great toons. Captain Planet just wasn't one of them.

yea I loved 90's cartoons as well, Batman, X-men,Beavis and butthead ,ren & stimpy and I remember the tales from the crypt were pretty cool as well

yeah if you really watch the Gi joe toons from the 80's the writers were brilliant, some of those episodes were so ahead of their time..Like talking about cloning and DNA ,that was unheard of..

GI JOE had a lot of talented writers. Jem writer Christy Marx wrote many GI JOE episodes too.

As for myself it's not as though I don't have ANY nostalgia for 80s properties...

I remember discussing He-Man episodes every day in my 11th grade Earth Science class with the other guys at the lab table.

I watched GI Joe and read the comics and had a passing knowledge of the characters even though I would never (shudder) bring myself to actually BUY any of the figures as I was an "Adventure Team" guy and the 3 3/4 Joes were just too damn small.

My younger cousin was in to Care Bears and then later TMNT and Transformers....Through osmosis I had a pretty good knowledge of who was who and what was going on. I actually loved when he'd bring his Transformers with him even though there's a 16-year age difference between us. They were just too damn cool!

But I still think even though the cartoons may have been very well done, it just seems like a glut of shows to push product...As opposed to 60s/70s stuff like Space Ghost, Josie and the Pussycats, Scooby Doo, etc.

Hmmmm....

I think the vast majority of tv cartoons are really, REALLY bad. Cheap, repetitive, shallow.... doesn't mean they weren't ENTERTAINING; but they weren't good. "Captain Planet" is in a league of it's own though. A cheap, heavyhanded STUPID show that NOBODY liked, that wouldn't die 'cos (as my buddy Chad puts it) "Turner couldn't admit he'd made a mistake."

Seriously; I've never met anyone who liked this one. It scars me that the movie might make it a thing. Then it'll NEVER die. 'Course the Topless Robot article had a good bit in the comments:
