Donner and Mankewicz grafted the "turn the world back ending" onto the shooting script for Superman: The Movie. The movie was overbudget, and there were doubts that Superman II would even be made at one point, as Donner's and the Salkind's relationship had gotten really ugly. They had even brought in Lester at this point as a "go-between" for the two camps. The decision was made to end the first movie in manner not quite so set-up for a sequel, since II looked foggy at the moment.

I'm of the opinion that Superman II is neither Lester's or Donner's. It's clearly a hybrid of the two ( and so both should have gotten co-director credits). Had Donner been retained, he would of had to figure out a new ending for Superman II anyway. So this version on DVD never would have happened since the first film had to go out on time while II was still filming. I like the way Superman the movie ended and I like the way Superman II came off as well. Given the circumstances and what was handed to Lester, I will give him credit for making a film that enjoyed both critical and commercial success. But if you want to compare the two directors, the only fair way to do that is by comparing Donner's first film with Lester's Superman III. There is no comparison. Donner is a superior director when given full reigns of the Superman story. I think the Donner Cut is just a "what if" kind of thing without the anchors of reality tied to it. Donner makes a lot of allowances for story arcs based only on the footage he has to work with. So those variances alone change the hypothetical scenarios extensively.

        asking again:
when did Zod kill a kid? either version et all etc.

Zod's last death threat to Luthor was a better take in the non Donner version.
" Why do you say this to me when You know I will kill you for it." In my opinion.

I saw it in the TV version (which added additional scenes) but don't remember it in either the Donner or Lester cut.

            That is a great line.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Some of the footage from the original network TV broadcast hadn't even had its FX work finished. You got that a lot back then, when they crammed as much footage as possible into the TV versions, even if it wasn't complete... other examples being Dune and ST:TMP.

Incidentally, the part where the kid is killed was filmed by Lester, not Donner.

Yeah, and the kid has a very British accent, even though they are supposed to be in Texas.

Ursa's line is more chilling than the actual "murder".

"He'll never grow up to be a man". Which would be fine for establishing them as ruthless and evil, but then Lester has them do slapsticky stuff.
