I'm really thinking about just starting to re-read/buy stuff from the 70s/80s. Better stories and none of this nonsense.

In the days of $4 cover prices, buying back issues is really a more attractive option, especially when you consider most modern books depreciate rapidly. It's possible with some legwork to pick up nice Bronze and later Silver Age books (and reading copies of earlier ones) at $4 each.
