    Really?

Guess all you guys that commented alomg these lines are blind
to the way Superman has changed over the years.

I don't need to expound on that... just watch that "Look, Up in the Sky: The
Amazing Story of Superman" documentary they put out recently for your answers.

Hue, seen it....care to elaborate a bit more? The Superman Mythos has been expanded from his leaping days working at the Daily star, but it hasn't been changed to the point that you are looking at a totally different character.

Superman came from and exploding planet landed on earth was raised by a caring loving couple, Works for a great metropolitan newspaper knows the hottest reporter in Metropolis and hangs out with a young and up and coming photographer....and fights for Truth Justics and the American way....or Global way if you want to be PC about it.......that's Superman in a nutshell....did i miss something????

I've seen it too. And I've read Les Daniels' "Complete History" and other works. There aren't as many different interpretations of Superman as of Batman, really. Batman has been handled in several divergent directions, but Superman has been essentially a social activist in his most early days and then super protector/boy scout since then. Elements of the legend have been changed, but the core remains the same. That's true even for Batman, but the interpretations have varied more greatly for that character.

Exactly... variations... over many, MANY years... that's all I was saying...
and you guys were speaking as if there was this new danger that they
were going to change the character in a detrimental way... My reaction
was HOW COULD IT HAPPEN? You've seen the documentary (and you've
seen SMALLVILLE!), and you'd have to agree that the changes
          are just that...changes.

I think if you missed anything, it was my point that the fact that
Superman has made enough changes that you could say he reflects
the times.... or the times reflect on him... and so there's your "changes"
...yet the danger of them changing the character TOO MUCH has never
been a significant issue, and, if you are betting men... never will be.

"Granfather's Superman is your Superman..." and all that.

But even Smallville ended with the classic Superman set-up, so it all comes out in the wash.

The best superhero movies and the ones that seem to do well are the ones that meet in the middle. They retain enough of the comic mythology to please the core audience but make it accessible/enjoyable for those who may only have a passing familiarity with the character.

                >that's Superman in a nutshell....did i miss something????

There’s the time he worked at a tv station, and when he was a teenager on tv without a costume, and when he was a thug that threatened to drop guys out windows to their death, and Superbaby....

Supes has been retooled as much as anybody, in no small part ‘cos he’s essentially the first superhero. He’s been around longer, and has survived a lot more social changes than most. (Even the famous mantra spoke of how he fought “a never ending battle for truth and justice.” The “American way” part was added way later.) But I think since the 50's they’ve pretty much got him sorted out. (Except for that weird future comic where he’s got a beard and uses a super-gun to kill Hitler. Or how they keep editing Superboy out of the continuity, then putting him back in, then editing him out....)

I think that’s why it weirds me out that they’re apparently doing his origin AGAIN. You really don’t have to; I think we all know it, and anyone who doesn’t will figure it out pretty quick. Think back to when we were all kids watching Superfriends; they didn’t explain ANYBODY’S origin and it didn’t matter. We’re here for the action, not a history lesson. A friend explained it to me as the new crew’s attempt to separate THEIR films from the rest. The constant new origins are the studio’s version of “Crisis on Infinite Earths;” they’re wiping the slate clean so’s to clear folks’ palettes of the preceding films. Although a less complimentary view I’ve read said:

                >THE SUPERMAN REBOOT - will have Julia Ormond joining Russell Crowe as Supermans parents on Krypton before it explodes. Because this will tell the Superman origin story. Yet again. Otherwise no one would know what was going on. “There’s a new director now, so naturally I assumed the character would be completely different,” audiences will no doubt say to one another. “By showing me what I already know and saw in two other movies, I’m now reassured that Superman is still exactly the same as always. And it was great. I enjoy watching the same story over and over and over again. I’m like a toddler.”

Yeah know that, but the average casual person who does not read comics doesn't know or care about those insignificant events in the comics mythology.

The non reader knows he works for the Daily Planet not WGBS TV nor that he was Superbaby. The modern day follower of Superman knows he was Clark from smallville not Superboy the legionnaire, nor all the silly silver age stories. They know the basic canon.

I don't think the really dedicated fan does either; they just wanna see Supes (or any superhero) show up and do something superheroic. That's why I find it so strange that they keep redoing origins, presenting the same bad guys, etc. I'd love to see a film with a new bad guy.

                              >Reynolds is annoying, obnoxious, and full of himself...

                              So was the Fonz.
