Movies: Green Lantern vs. Man of Steel

Not trying to start a new debate here. Everyone's opinions are set and will not change. Warner Bros. made a mistake casting Reynolds as the lead and marketing the whole thing around an actor who has NEVER, in a lead role, had a financially successful movie. Is he likeable? I think so. Talented? Moderately. Bankable movie star? Not a chance. They also had a director that didn't grasp the character and relied on above average effects to tell the story. I liked the movie and will buy it on disc, but it fell short of it's potential, much like most 2011 movies.

The sobering thought is this is the same studio who is producing the new Superman movie. Have they made similar mistakes in casting and directing here? Cavill is a unknown factor in this. He's nowhere near being mistaken for a star, so that may work in the movie's favor. They won't be able to market the whole thing based on him, but rather the Superman concept. Russel Crowe as Jor-El? Hard to tell if this is gimmick or genius.

Also, we have the issue of the suit. With the current comics changing, are they coing to reflect that change in the film? Will he have a collar? Does WB think they need to contemporize Superman? We haven't seen any shots yet, so who knows? By this time into production, we had some pics of Routh in his suit for Returns. I liked that movie as well, but not as much as I wanted to.

We really, really need a Superman movie to blow the roof off next Summer. When one company does well, it benefits all. I am just a bit concerned Warners is going to screw this up. Snyder did make a cool movie in 300, but is he right for this? I hope so, I truly do. I need a good Superman movie badly. I would have liked another villain than Zod, which has been done before. So while many bash the Green Lantern movie, and that's their right to do so, keep in mind that Superman is coming next...financed by the same suits.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

I'm mostly worried that we have already seen the Superman suit in the DC Reboot art that has already surfaced. The WW tv show was close to the redesign in the current comics, too.

I like Snyder's stuff, he's got a certain visual flare, but I don't think he's right for Superman. A better choice than McG or Tim Burton though.

Marvel studios has been taking some chances that have paid off with proven mid-line directors with no summer blockbusters under their belt in Kenneth Branagh and John favreau. Although I'm sure they knew exactly what they were getting in Joe Johnston

I actually feel pretty good about the Superman Movie. I feel Snyder's proven himself with "The Watchmen" & "300". And after watching Henry Cavill in "The Tudors", I can easily see him as SUPERMAN. I don't have a problem with Zod being the Villain...but I'm a little bummed Zack didn't pick his buddy Gerard Butler for the part.

The Zod thing is kinda lame, wish it was something new. A really creepy Patrick Stewart Brainiac or something for a change from the last successful films.

I don't think Superman's look will be fooled with at all. Comics are always pushing the boundaries because they have to constantly reinvent their characters with these contrived "events" to try and breath new life into slagging sales. But with high profile films, which often cost $200 million to produce and market, no one is going to mess much with the product branding everyone knows. All Superman needs is a story that, FOR ONCE, isn't all about Lois Lane and Lex Luthor...Can I get an AMEN?

I think their going with the design from the guy Sandy knew who designed the clear, plastic, Superman suit with lightening effects under the S shield. Here's the old thread:

Tim Burton!?!?! You're positively mad! MAD I say!!!!

Alex Ross said it best. Anyone making a Superman film should hang this quote around their neck!

"Superman should never reflect any fashionable trend or affectation or a specific era-hairstyle, speech patterns, etcetera. He is beyond that. He is out of time."

I don't think they'll mess too much with Suprman's look, nor should they have any reason to. Part of the reason they're making this film is to satisfy the earlier lawsuit the Siegel and/or Shuster estates (?) had with DC/Warners (I think WB had to have a Superman film ready to go in 2012, otherwise they had to pay the estate a huge chunk of change).

Agreed on pushing Luthor and Lois off to the side for this flick - I'd rather see a bad guy like Brainiac take the stage, with the emphasis on ACTION (giant robots! High tech weapons! Explosions!).
"It's sad that governments are chiefed by the double tongues. There is iron in your words of death for all Comanche to see, and so there is iron in your words of life. No signed paper can hold the iron. It must come from men. The words of Ten Bears carries the same iron of life and death. It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life... or death. It shall be life."

^I don't agree either. Sure, elements of the mythos must change, but the core should always remain the same. And the look can be tweaked, but not tampered with.

Agree, when it comes to Superman you leave it alone. it is what it is take it or leave it.

when it comes to the suit you can use new fabric you can cut the "S" slightly different.....but you never move away from the Iconic image. it's too embedded in the minds of everyone. you change it from it's core and you lose your audience.

Superman was the same with my Grandfather, my Father, me and for my children.....leave it alone........
