Finally saw the movie last night with a couple of geeky friends and we all really enjoyed it. Sure it has it moments but overall it delivers as a solid GL movie. It's very faithful to the comics and it's a blast to see the rings do their stuff!

Mark Strong is the best thing about it by far, his Sinestro is spot on, and can't wait to see him in the sequel. Ryan Renolds makes a really decent GL. The Guardians are superb as are kilowog and Tomar-Re. I was pleasantly surprised to see a certain female character in there as well, I hope they continue to flesh her and her organisation out in the sequels.

Exactly right. I’ve had more than a few threads almost turn into a fight. It was never my intention to cheese folks off; but I tend to have very different takes on things than most people here and it’s tough to express them without seeming recalcitrant if I can’t read how someone’s taking what I’m saying. It’s especially difficult if you’re trying to explain something that’s directly opposed to what someone else thinks. By way of example; I genuinely disliked Avatar, and I’ve explained why in another post but because Hector liked it so much it’s tough for him to wrap his head around the concept, so dissenters are just “haters” as far as he’s concerned. Could the situation be reconciled? Sure, but it’d be a LOT of work, considering that online you’re missing about 95% of the cues you’d get in normal face to face interaction. Not to mention the other folks that’d come in during the discussion. (Hector has many friends.... POWERFUL friends....)

So.... what’s the moral? I dunno. I always try to cut folks some slack online. I’m pretty thick skinned, so I can let a lot slide.

Yes, I'm in the same boat. I have a slightly twisted sense of humor(maybe more than slightly)and my words often offend people, despite the use of emoticons(or worse, I forget to use them). The printed word is just so cold online. Sometimes I forget where I am and make an off color joke that would have got a big laugh at my blue collar job...but goes over like a turd in a punch bowl here. My meltdown of Mattel's ugly retro Batman(which I still hate) being an example. My original joke was really just a joke...but an inappropriate joke for the Mego Museum, as it clearly offended some people(not all).Luckily most of you forgave me and I'm grateful for that, THANKS...and I've learned for that mistake.

In closing...it's REALLY HARD for people to understand why you don't like something that they like very much. It's unfathomable to them and feelings get hurt...it's just human nature.

But it's still better than stuff like Fantastic Four 1 and 2, Ghost Rider, Elektra, Steel, Catwoman, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Green Hornet, Jonah Hex etc.
I think part of the problem is people go into these movies with high expectations of what the movie should, or could, be based on their love of the comic book material and as a result cannot enjoy the movie for what it actually is. I liked GL and will pick it up on Bluray as soon as it is released. it was just cool seeing GL up there on the big screen. never thought it would happen and it did.

and for the record, I liked most of those movies quoted above....with the exception of Electra and Catwoman and maybe Jona Hex, the rest were decent movies...again maybe not exactly true to the comics on which they are based but fun movies nonetheless

But by a like token you gotta accept that if someone IS offended, their feelings are genuine as well. Complicated, but I think the solution is discourse. (Preferably without tons of adjectives.) That’s tricky too, since a lot of the time we know what we feel but not exactly why. (And it’s not usually worth the trouble to get into.)

                >I think part of the problem is people go into these movies with high expectations

Or at least really specific expectations. When I think of GL I think giant hands and birdcages, not ack-ack cannons and autoguns. *sigh* Some people have a different take. I think the trick HERE is to remember that there’s no right answer; and accordingly it’s okay to like OR dislike the film.

I finally saw it, I enjoyed it. The romance angle kind of dragged it a little and I thought they missed the mark a little but it wasn't the huge let down I was expecting to see. I honestly liked Reynolds as Hal, he injected some levity to the role.

My son bailed on me seeing this and in retrospect, I am glad. Hector Hammond would be to him what the robot lady was to me in Superman 3, good old fashioned nightmare fuel. That's where I think I felt let down by the film, IMO the casual swearing and the horror just weren't needed.

I'm 40 and a slightly jaded guy, seeing these Superhero flix is just so much better when I've got my little guy with me. We'll be first in line for Captain America.

Glad to hear you will be aiding the good Captain in [hopefully] beating HP at the box office next weekend.

Also glad to hear you finally got to see GL. As a longtime GL fan, I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. Did it have it's weak points? Yes, as any story introducing a character must, but was it the disaster that critics lead the general public to believe it was? By no means....
