Reviews for Lantern are coming in... And they're ugly.
Critics lambasted Star Wars when it first came out, but who knows.
On the whole, Star Wars received very favourable reviews from most of the critics in 1977. Roger Ebert and Vincent Canby were both positive about it.
Others like Pauline Kael and Jonathan Rosenbaum were slightly less impressed, but they were in the minority.
Well, they say the production plus promotion cost was around $300, but that probably doesn't take into account advertising revenue the movie generated.
In the old days movies use to have to generate several times the production cost to be considered a hit - now it's no where close to that. Partially because of how movie financing is supplemented with advertising, but also because of the expanded world market and DVDs - etc.
It doesn't really matter what cost they disclose - for all we know this movie has already made back everything and now they're looking to make a profit.
I actually love terrible movies. It's the ones in the middle I can't stand wasting my time with.
That's what I keep hearing in relation to GL. Sort of a run of the mill, retread with very little inspired about it. I think it'll do about as good as FF did. It'll make decent money, but it won't draw a great deal of attention. It'll just end up as average summer superhero fare.
i too didn't expect it to gain much critical acclaim. i do consider reviews but is never the sole deciding factor to see or not. obviously a comic movie of this magnitude would be silly to skip for a fan boy so any reviews prior are pretty irrelevant to present company.
the trailers and lead actor are not winning me but i am hopeful.
It sure as hell looks like Green Lantern to me from the trailers. Not sure what everyone else was expecting. CGI was a must for a movie like this. The costume may be pushing it, but it looks fine on screen.

I don't know I remember people making perdictions about the 1st transformer's too but they were all proved wrong. I hope it does well. I want to see more from DC as far as movie's go.

I'll watch it for myself and make up my own mind.
Oh...don't worry about that...lousy movies can certainly be blockbusters too...like your before-mentioned Transformers' movies...crappy...but highly successful.

I dunno, I predicted Transformers would be a huge hit and it was. I think a lot of time you can tell how a movie is going to do based on the vibe heading into the release. Transformers had huge, positive buzz. Green Lantern does not.
You can't trust a hardcore movie critic's review of a comic movie necessarily, but you can get information from it. I've since read about a half dozen reviews from comic fans who loathed the film as well. And not in the typical "waaah they ruined our favorite character" kind of way, but in the "this was just a terrible movie" kind of way.
I still expect that it'll do okay and probably get a sequel like FF did, but I don't think it's going to be the hit property that DC wants and needs it to be. I suppose we'll see in the days and weeks ahead.

I don't. If it stinks I hope it tanks hard.
You're going to see more DC properties turned into movies no matter what.
WB owns DC - they make a killing off licensing and merchandising properties they already own with or without box office to support their ventures. There's no reason for them to stop. They don't finance movies to watch - they finance them to sell. It's about marketing. The people who finance these things don't see superheroes, or characters, they see brands. Making something watchable, something that earns box office is secondary, and that's the problem right now.
I'm definitely seeing this film this weekend. This is one of a few times when a film is universally panned, yet few share the same reasons. In fact most critics and those who have caught early views contradict themselves. One says it's too serious, the other says it's too silly. One says it's too slow, another says it's too rushed. What gives? I never doubted Lantern would get less than stellar reviews simply because his origin is so unlike other heroes in tow. But in an age of talking cars, Transformers destroying cities, and the like, it perplexes me why people have a hard time accepting the premise of Lantern. Very odd. It sounds like people came in with little knowledge of the actual Lantern origin, so they brought a preconceived expectation instead of letting the film come to them. I'll find out for sure this weekend.
