Reviews for Lantern are coming in... And they're ugly.

You know what though? After my experience with 'Super 8' and all the critics saying this was the 'second coming', I think it's a safe bet I can walk out of this movie with a different opinion as well. Green Lantern is pure sci-fi. I never thought critics would "get it". So these early reviews are not bothering me all that much. Plus the reviews suggest the critics don't understand what they are seeing. They can't seem to articulate what bothers them outside of simply not understanding the concept. I'll be seeing it Friday and offer up a spoiler-free review.

This was always going to be a hard sell to the critics. They like Super Heroes grounded in reality, and GL is pure fantasy. It's no surprise they are gushing over X-Men:First Class, but bashing GL. I just hope their opinions don't affect GL's performance.

when I heard the casting of Ryan Reynolds I was all ready to hate GL like I did Hornet. When I saw the body paint costume I was all ready to hate GL. BUT then they started with clips and the ring effects blow me away. I saw Hector Hammond and was pleasantly shocked
I am still not sold on the costume look or Reynolds but I am now open minded and hope the script will meet up to the stuffing visuals

I am not rushing to see first class after being left cold by x3 and wolvie. frist class seems to be the xmen also rans (banshee and havok really)

Critics lambasted Star Wars when it first came out, but who knows.

After the first two trailers I had some bad feelings about the film mainly because it looked more CGI than actual footage, but I bought in after the 3rd trailer.

The big hope is that kids and teens like it and buy into it. If they do, the movie will succeed because they are more apt to see it over and over again.

DC and the future of its movie universe has a ton riding on this film. If it does well, we may well see Flash, Aquaman and so on. If not, it will likely only be reboots of Superman and Batman for the foreseeable future.

I debating whether to try to stay awake during the midnight show.

I hope it does well. Being this is DCs first big film. GL is such a great character...and full of options. If this does poorly we have very little chance for any characters outside of Superman and Batman. Green Arrow, Flash and even Firestorm could be great movies. I will go see it just to get the turnout higher. Look at it this way...Ryan Reynolds is a hell of lot better than Jack Black, which was originally floated as Hal...that would have been a travesty!

I will probably go see it if the kids want to see the movie. Oh...I have to admit that when I first saw the preview I busted out laughing. I'm sure that's not the reaction the movie makers are looking for.

Warners has a lot riding on this as others have said. The promotional blitz for this is pretty astounding. Advertising on Hot Wheels packages!?! Unheard of.

It's either going to blow up or tank. I think it's going to do well, but critic's inability to be open-minded on the TYPE of film they are watching may sway the common folk away. Let's hope not. From what I've seen, it deserves to do well, and we'd all like to see more GL, Flash, Aquaman etc get the big-screen treatment.

I'll be there Friday with the boy no matter what.

The first trailer looked fun - kinda like Iron Man.

The new one looks silly and seems to take itself to seriously.

The current clip they put out with GL fighting Parallax looks ridiculously bad to me.

                    I hoping for a fun movie - but now I don't know.

                      Chris

I think the difference is that comics are already pure fantasy - you can draw anything. The minute you have a real life dude walking around in tights - unless you're a huge comic fan already - it's going to seem silly.

I think you can get wrapped up in the pure fantasy of a comic character harnessing the power of green and being vulnerable to the power of yellow - but yellow is not threatening in any kind of reality based form - it's silly.

It needs a strategy to overcome that silliness if it wants to appeal to a wide audience. Iron Man used humor and took a few pages from James Bond movies - which is proven to work. This movie may have stayed too close to the source.

Anyway - I'm still hoping to enjoy it.

Sorry, I don't agree. Critics were really wowed by "Star Wars" and it was nominated for Best Picture the year it came out. Total mainstream acceptance.

Here, I actually found an article which sources some more info on this:

“A great work of popular art,” gushed Time magazine about the first installment. Newsweek called it “pure sweet fun all the way.” The Hollywood Reporter claimed that “it will undoubtedly emerge as one of the true classics in the genre of science fiction/fantasy films.” The New York Times’ Vincent Canby called it “the most elaborate, most expensive, most beautiful movie serial ever made.”

Lambasted was a poor choice of word. Variety gave Star Wars a tepid review and Pauline Kael, the trend-setting critic of the time whose body of work remains revered, wrote it was too busy and lacked heart.

Obviously other reviewers had a much higher opinion of the film.

But my point is that well respected critics or a particular critic can be out of tune with the general public. Haven't seen GL and have no idea how it will play.

I'm hoping the critics with the poor opinions of GL will be as out of step as Kael and Variety's were way back in the day.

Seskel & Ebert called Star Wars a "Turkey" when it first came out and said "don't waste your money". 3 Months later they took back their review and called it a "Classic".
