Reviews for Lantern are coming in... And they're ugly.
Yeah - I'm not saying all critics loved Star Wars, but generally it was a very well received movie and if Lucas' claim that it wasn't was based on a few reviewers then he's really being too sensitive.
As pointed out in that article I posted even Kael really liked "Empire" - so while you should obviously make up your own mind - I don't think critics are automatically going to hate a movie just because they're critics. Nobody wants to see a bad movie - critics or not.

But my point is that well respected critics or a particular critic can be out of tune with the general public. Haven't seen GL and have no idea how it will play.
Yeah - I totally agree with that.
I want it to be a good movie - but if it's not I'm not going to be hoping it makes piles of cash anyway, that makes no sense to me at all.
Seskel & Ebert called Star Wars a "Turkey" when it first came out and said "don't waste your money". 3 Months later they took back their review and called it a "Classic".
I'm not questioning you, but is there anything online to back that up? I'm just really curious because I always thought they were both big fans.
Well,I know Roger Ebert has wanted to ban every horror film that's come down the line. So that alone makes me ignore anything he criticizes.
There's a lot of opinions that I don't subscribe to with Ebert. He's certainly got a bias against film violence and a bias towards cute girls and sex in his ratings, and both of those things taint his opinions in my mind. But nobody is perfect.
He's got a lot of amazing theoretical and historical insight into film. Check out some of his essays, or even better his commentary on the DVD of Citizen Kane.
I'm going to go on Friday, and I really hope it's good.....but honestly, there's parts of the trailer that just makes me roll my eyes. In the comic, the GL oath is cool, when Ryan Reynolds says it, I wince. While I love comics, I've been of the opinion that what makes a good comic most likely won't make a great movie.
My step-sons know Aquaman is my favorite character, and when we were talking about seeing GL on Friday, they asked me if an Aquaman movie came out would I go to a midnight showing on the first day. I frankly told them 'probably not' and they looked shocked. Had to explain that I really didn't think Aquaman would translate well to a movie. The trailer would have to absolutely blow me away for me to go see it, let alone be the first in line. Same for Hawkman. And Flash. And Green Arrow.
I'm gonna go the first day to GL because I really hope that I'll be pleasantly surprised, and I know how much is riding on this. But, deep in my heart, GL is one of those characters that I just don't think will translate well to a movie. Hope I'm wrong, and I'll gladly plunk down my $11 to be proven wrong.
As an aside: Ironicly, it's some of the characters that aren't a big success as comics that I think might make good movies. Doom Patrol. Adam Strange. Kamandi. But I'm probably wrong.....
I still read review "just because" but never let critics influence my decision. I am pretty good at telling from the trailer if I wil like a movie or not. Critics aren't as relevant as they used to be either with more movies coming out "not screened" for critics b/c they knwo the critics will trash it.
I don't care what critics say either...but I myself have a feeling Green Lantern is going to be the weakest superhero entry this Summer...it just looks like a bloody video game to me...plus I have always HATED Ryan Reynolds...every time I see him and hear his stupid jokes...I just wanna slap him in the face...the same applies to Chris Evans...but at least Captain America looks like a real-live action movie...not a Playstation video game like the Green Lantern.
It could very well be the worst of the lot...but at the same time...it could be the biggest superhero flick box office hit of this Summer as well.
I just go home from seeing the Chicago premier of Green Lantern...
I loved it!
It was fun and entertaining! I was excited by the action and adventure of it all! It played out just like I hoped it would! It was a fun action movie with a good heart and lots of action (not like explosions every two minutes action) and story that carried it. It never felt slow or like it didn't know where it was going. If anything I wanted more! Stay after they start rolling the credits, you won't be disappointed. More over my wife loved it too! she was raving the whole way home about it being the best movie she saw all year. No I am sure there is some biased in my statements here given that I have been a fan for years and years but the fact is I loved it and I will see it again, a few times, and will be proud to purchase the Blu-Ray DVD combo pack when it becomes available! The only thing I will say against it is that there are a few seance of CG that look almost unfinished, it isn't the whole movie, many if not most of the movie looks really good, but there are some scenes here and there they look sub-par.
