Did your parents read comics as kids?

I was practically born with a comic in my hand. I don't recall ever NOT liking comic book super heroes. While my first exposure was probably either Spider-Man on the Electric Company, or Adam West's Batman, it wasn't long until my parents were buying me comics and all sorts of related swag.

I vaguely recall when I was 4 or 5 my Dad stopped and picked up a Justice League book I had and asked "Who's this?"

    "That's Green Arrow" I said.

"Green Arrow? When I was a kid, Green Arrow was clean-shaven. And he had a sidekick like Robin".

I think I kind of thought my dad was nuts. And then not long after I got one of DC's Blue Ribbon Digests with the origins of Green Arrow (clean-shaven) and his partner Speedy (my first intro to him). I was floored.

I later learned my dad didn't have many comics as a kid, as they were literally dirt poor. But he did get some hand-me down comics from a better-off cousin. When All-Star Squadron came out, I was constantly grilling him about who he remembered. He remembered the Golden Age Flash, Green Lantern and Hawkman. And of course Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel. The only Marvel character he seemed to recall was Captain America, and he clued me into Bucky before I knew of him too. My dad even had a brother who could draw a pretty mean Batman he said!!!

I think my dad's appreciation of the Golden Age characters is what really made me a fan of the JSA and their peers. These were my Dad's super heroes, and that was just cool.

My mom was pretty well-versed with heroes, and was a big fan of The Adventures of Superman TV series. I don't recall ever really asking her what comics she had as a kid, she just knew them!

Years after she passed away, my uncle found an old watch in a toolbox in my grandfathers out-building. It was a Mary Marvel watch! No one was around to confirm, but I have to assume it was my Mom's watch and my grandfather planned to try and fix it and never got around to it.

So I come by my super hero obsession honest, even though I took it to extremes my folks never would.

    What about you guys?

I'm not sure about my dad, but my mom did. She was poor as a kid too, but always read the ones her friends had, like Superman, Tarzan and Captain Marvel.

My Dad apparently read Mad Magazine as a kid, which was the only comic book that had any kind of approval in my house growing up (on the sly).

He had a heart attack a few years ago and while he was stuck in the hospital I brought him a huge stack of Lone Wolf and Cub. He later told me that he was shocked that he'd get into comic books at his age.

My mom's the one holdout in the family that we've never been able to find a comic to suit her tastes. There really needs to be some trashy historical romance graphic novels aimed at older women.

My mom's parents ran a corner store, so she always got free comics, but I think just Archie and girly stuff. I don't think she was really into them that much though. She also liked the comic strips in the paper - and still reads those everyday.

My grandmother would always be amazed at how much that stuff would have been worth if they had kept some of it instead of stripping them to return them.

I'm pretty sure my Dad never read anything in his life except for the paper - and even then he's more interested in the sports section.

When I got into comics as a kid my parents encouraged me because I liked them and they were glad I was reading.

          That's awesome!

I've been trying to get my mom into comics for YEARS. She always reads the newspaper comics, and she loves reading novels. I tried to get her to read Maus a few times. She LOVED "Kavalier and Clay" so I tried to get her to read "A Contract with God". It's been sitting on one of her dressers untouched for years now.

          Ah well...

my mom did a lot, she had some issues I know were worth a lot of cash. she was born in 1940 so most of hers were from 1945 to about 1955. but most were tossed out. I did find a sgt. Rock showcase from 1962 that was left in a box but it's pretty sad shape. that must have been my uncle's comic.

I think my dad. He loved reading about Tarzan, and the amazing artwork. Never saw them though. He still reads comics to this day, in the paper. I don't anymore. I think I stopped reading the funny pages in the paper years ago...and never got into comic books.

My Dad did. He had all of the really good comics that dealers/collectors would just about kill for these days.

Sadly, I did not get to inherit any of them as my Grandmother threw all of his "good stuff" away when he was a kid. NICE!!!

I think my mom thought she was "too intelligent" (She's not really ) for "funny books" as she called them....And that's the same attitude she gave me toward '66 Batman ("An insult to your intelligence" she called it...she just didn't GET the camp aspect apparently). In that way she's a lot like my grandmother...

I have heard tell that my uncle though was a comic book reader...Uncle Scrooge being his favorite. Reminded him of HIS uncle who was a very wealthy but miserly s.o.b. ...

And a great-uncle swore up and down that he had all of the "Adventures of Captain Marvel" back in the day...

Believe it or not, my mom's mom was into the Golden Age Green Lantern as a girl. She used to buy me a lot of Tarzan comics before I was even in school and would help me read them. She was the best.

My dad is more of a sports guy. The cards he had that my grandmother gave away on him would be worth a fortune today. He managed to save a few though.

He says he did have some comic books though. Superman, Batman, Captain America he remembers. He doesn't know numbers or exact titles. He apparently used to trade them with the local barber who always had comics in the shop. The other kids in the neighborhood did the same. You buy some comics, read them, then take them to the barber to trade for ones you hadn't read yet.
