The raspy voice is problematic when used in conversational tones (Dent, Gordon, & Bats on the rooftop,) but totally works when he's in full BATRAGE (interrogation room scene.)

Bale is the first Batman on screen that I believe could kick my *****, and every other Batactor's.

On the one hand, I'm a little sad to hear this. Year One is absolutely my favorite Batman story, and I think the Nolan movies are as close to that as we're ever going to get. I don't 100% like everything about the movies, but all and all, these are the Batman movies I always wanted.

But I'm glad they're and least going to get a trilogy out of it and wrap up the the plot threads from the first two.

On the other hand, I'm not sure how many more Nolan movies I would want. I love Nolan's take on things, but the requirements of his vision make a lot of heroes/villians/story lines from the comics non-starters. Case in point: he had Ras in the first one, but I just can see the whole Lazerus Pit thing working into Nolan's "realistic" interpretation of things.

I love these movies, but after the 3rd if might be time for something different.

I don't think getting typecast is playing any role in Bale leaving. Bale had an accomplished resume before Batman ever came along. His tenure in this franchise has alot to do with his artistic relationship along side director Christopher Nolan. With Nolan leaving, I'm certain he has absolutely no interest in exploring this character any further. Its very much the same reason why Tobey McGuire marched in lock step with Sam Rami in Spiderman.

But you know, I don't think the whole concept of typecasting has much effect on actors unless they make career choices that encourage that notion. The classic example with heroes is always Adam West. But the problem with Adam was he continued to do personal appearances as that character for nearly ten years after the show was canceled. And for all his complaining about getting typecast, he was always the first to say he enjoyed the appearances because the money was so good. Well that was a career choice. He chased the money at the cost of his career and wants to blame "typecasting" as his failure to do anything else. Interesting enough, his Batman fame has made him a fortune as those kids grew up with that appreciation and got into the business only to turn around and offer him roles in other shows late in his life. So even his example has ended with money in his pockets.

But there are scores of actors known for certain roles that went on to healthy careers after those parts. Lee Majors was the SMDM. But after he left, he was doing the Fall Guy within two years and that lasted just as long. Tobey McGuire has had successful films before and during his stint as Spidey. Even George Clooney, who took alot of heat for killing the initial Batman franchise (thanks to Schuemacher), went on to film glory and fame years after.

Honestly the only two actors who have truly carried the typecast curse in the hero genre' has been both Reeves who first played Superman. And I guess that just had alot to do with the fact neither were really well known for anything else before they assumed those high profile roles. Plus there was no mask or CGI character to cover their face, so the public only had that one association to relate those actors with. But, with regards to Batman, I don't think ANY actor will ever have to worry about that part, as long as they don't make it a career choice like the 60's child did.

I must say, that as much of a Nolan & Bale Fan that I am...I would still like to see more BATMAN Movies. But who ever taker over...they have some pretty tall Shoes to fill.

And like any of my favorite Superhero Movies...casting the lead role is paramount!! I you don't get Batman/Bruce Wayne right...you've got nothing!

Kilmer could have been good...under the right Director, and a good Script. Loved him in Tombstone!

With the typecasting of West and Reeves, I think a lot of it had to do with the fact they played the characters on television.

Even though there are DVDs today that can be watched over and over, West and Reeves put many more hours of programs on film/tape as Batman and Superman than anyone who played those parts on film. There's maybe 10 hours of Reeve as Superman, 5 hours of Keaton and so far 5 hours of Bale as Batman.

Being on every week makes a difference with how the public views an actor than once every 3 years or so. Bale, if choose, could make three movies between Batman films, or more if he took supporting roles. Heck, Michael Cain probably is in 3 movies a year.

Not only were Superman on weekly and Batman twice weekly during production, those shows were in or remain in perpetual daily re-runs.

Also today's audience is much more clued into the entertainment business. At one time a person was either a TV star or a movie star, but today actors can go back and forth if they choose.

One could argue that there are better parts in TV shows than in films today, particularly for women.

I guess Tom Welling might be the acid test for this. Where does his career go after Smallville? I believe he's a better actor than, say, Dean Cain, but unless he gets the role in the new Superman movie — which I don't think is going to happen — I really can't see him carrying a major motion picture. But I think he'll get other roles somewhere. I read that he's got a production deal with CW and is also interested in directing.

I also wonder about the kids from the Harry Potter movies. Talk about being identified with the role. Kids have grown up with them. Will they be accepted in other roles.

But I can certainly understand why Bale would want to move on to other things. And I think it's crazy to expect adult actors to spend a lifetime in the same roles, particularly super-hero movies which are physically and mentally tough on the actors in the principal parts.

It takes more than an hour for Bale to get into the Batman suit. The harnesses used for the fight and flight and jumping scenes are supposed to be very painful.

Plus, how long is a character going to be interesting to play. Actors a vagabonds at heart. Do a part; move on to the next.

But JOhnny Weismuller played Tarzan for almost 20 years in the 30s and 40s. But Karloff gave up Frankenstein's monster after 3 films (back injury and likely boredom) for other actors who could handle the riggers of the role. Who knows what kind of injuries Bale might have.

The success of the films have something to do with it too.

What about Robert Downey Jr.? Iron Man made him a bigger star than he had ever been before. He's contractually bound for Avengers and Iron Man 3, but I don't think Marvel/Disney will want to pay the price he would demand to make a fourth movie. Plus, he would be into his 50s by that point and his stardom might be on the wane again.

I'm OK with another actor taking up the reigns, as long as they do it the way Bond or Who have run. Don't bring the storyline back to "zero" again. At this point, I don't need to see how Bruce became Batman anymore.
                              It's all good!
