    "Why isn't Green Lantern Black?"

I think this really puts it into perspective given that there is an entire generation of kids/teens and the non-comics reading masses out there who only know Green Lantern as the fella from the Justice League cartoon (and Toys R Us and even the Halloween costumes).

Hopefully this will show Warners the audience cross-appeal and franchise potential in all of this and we see the movies expand accordingly in the sequels.

Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

They will need to give more than a passing nod to Nick Jones playing John Stewart in the movie (ala War Machine in the Iron Man movies).

The original tale of the Green Lantern has nothing to with John Stewart which you reference. He is simply one of many who have come since Hal Jordan. I believe in following the story as it is laid out. Lets bury this notion that because he's black he has some kind of right of passage to rewrite the history of the Green Lantern Corp. For once, lets be truthful about the story and leave cultural bias out of the picture.

I hope to see John Stewart and Guy Gardner in this franchise, but if you are going with the GL Corps saga, you have to start with Hal.

The Point Being, not everyone is as immersed in comics and has any clue about who Hal Jordan is unless they are over forty or wander into comic stores every Wednesday.

To the public at large now, Green Lantern is the guy in the Justice League cartoon. Mass culture (TV, action figures at TRU) vs comic store culture (less than 100,000 hits per month). Just puts things a tiny bit into perspective. It might behoove the Warner Bros publicity machine to spend a moment letting folks know John Stewart is in the film and will obviously be getting a ring in sequels (as in the comic book lore). It was just as cool when Hal got his nod when he had his cameo in the Justice League cartoon.

Nothing revisionist going on here, just public perception in the social media sphere (which is an increasingly important aspect of the marketing world). That isn't to say that the story doesn't shift anyways over time and in these media translations... much of the origin story adapted from Geoff Johns version are retcons.

the characters used in the Justice League cartoon were chosen because of their ethnicity and/or sex....not because they were actually on the team....i remember clearly when the show came out they said they chose john Stewart because he was black and they chose Hawkwoman because she was a woman. They did not want the show to be a bunch of white guys running around in tights.
they even did the same thing in the 70's with the super friends by creating all the cartoon specific ethnic characters - Samarui, Black Vulcan, Apache chief etc...
Nothing wrong with it, but those cartoons are not the be all and end all of the storyline.
Besides, Hal was the GL in the superfriends and that ran for like 12 years, far longer than JL and JLU combined.

I'm sure the same type of question came up when a FLASH in a tin hat ran across the screen in Brave and the bold and they are both white.

Yes the racial issue seems to be coming through but the reality is JL/JLU was the mass media representation for GL for the last decade.

even when the GL in the comics was Kyle Bruce Timm et al chose John because he was but ethnic and probably a better character to play with (like they chose Wally)

Even though in Kyle and the corps were in JLU and SAS, a and Hal was in The batman, JL forntier and GL first flight, the fact is John Stewart was the Bruce Timm-verse's primary GL, and has become definitive for most casual fans (it didn't hurt that John Stewart was also on Static shock the WB show as gl)

I actually think they chose hawkgirl over hawkman if only becuase his back story was a nightmare for a casual fan

BINGO! I think the mis-perception is understandable given the context.

As jds and samurai are basically saying, it's a fair question posed here..

AND there are many that are making more drama focusing on
the "racial" part of the term "racial issue".... it's an issue with
the character choice, Hal instead of John, plain and simple.

yep - that is the impression i got from the quotes. the kids just know the current cartoon - not the history. it is funny they feel they feel the Black GL is being slighted by substituting a white guy when the addition of Stewart to the JL show was in all intents and purposes replacing the original Line up of teh JL with the black GL just as they replace hawkman with hawkgirl - for broader appeal.

since Stewart will be featured in the film they will hopefuly get an Ah Ha moment.

I think if you look at any current comic story line (or cartoon) and then see films based on that lore, you will see that most studios go back to the roots of that material to introduce those characters to the buying public. Since when have any of the Hulk films reflected the current stories in the comics over the past ten years? None. How about Spider-man? Zilch. Films have to be broad based entertainment and not just for one age group in the cartoon market.

Que????? I'm just saying that "others" (the ones that he Posted) focus on GL being a brother. It's obvious that those people who posted those remarks need to buy a clue......

The title in the thread says it all. If its just the "character", then why didn't he just say John Stewart, and not reference his skin color? I mean, I thought "everyone" knew who this "cartoon" Lantern was?
