Yeah, read that from a link at Comic Book Resources' Urban Legends. Great read every week.

Sounds like Geoff Johns wouldn't have had nearly as much to play with, but we'd have been spared "Evil Hal" for 10 years.

Hal now leads his rag-tag band of heroes and rebel GLs against Sinestro on Oa. But Entropy, through the New Guardians, throws him a curve: they reveal to Hal that his father didn't die by accident; his death was arranged by the Old Guardians, who saw the potential for a great GL in Hal but foresaw that he would need a trauma to make him the fearless man he could be. At the moment before the final conflict, Hal is shaken to the core: can he fight to defend the beings who killed his father?

Other than the aspect of two sets of Guardians, those covers were still usable for the most part. Interesting.

So I guess Hal wouldn't have been evil, but he would have been an "outsider" with Ion-like power?

I like the scared Guardian's Face at the bottom of the first cover. He looks like he just wet his robe!

I remember reading about that when it happened. I was getting the Previews catalog at the time and know it was solicited that way. Cool to see the promo art again. Very cool.

This got me thinkin'.... there are certain stories that are BEYOND a cliche: they're neccesary. Expected. At some point the hero HAS to doubt their effectiveness. At some point they NEED a sidekick/apprentice/mascot. There HAS to be a story where you find out one of their closest friends is a bad guy.

Has the "dead" hero become one of these? Do you HAVE to die at least once to be an A-lister? Is THAT Wonder Woman's problem?

You might have to ask Daredevil that question very soon, too.

Wonder Woman DID die, once at the end of Crisis and later during her second run, when she came back as an Olympian Goddess for awhile. Neither was played up as much as the Superman or Captain America stuff, guess there was real news happening on her day.

So long as Death issues are a sales boon they will keep doing them. It doesn't make or break an A list character but it's a way to renew interest and get cheap/free publicity. Death stories can't put someone over the top from B to A list (Booster Gold and Blue Beetle)

In Booster's case, he's not A-list by any stretch of the imagination, but the initial Death of Beetle storyline seems to have dragged him up from the D list to the C or even B list.

He's starring/co-starring in no less than three titles right now (with the deceased Blue Beetle co-starring in Booster's title). We'll see how much momentum it has in the the long run though.

I like it just the way it is.

nothing like watching a hero fall. Plus it shows Hal for what he really is. A murdering scumbag.
