Alex Ross' NEW Captain America

Anyone have preferences for alternative Captain America outfits that have shown up over the years?

I also quite liked "The Captain" outfit worn by Steve Rogers, later to be taken by USAgent.

I like the basic design from Ross, I'd like to see the high gloss part go away and replaced with chainmail. Does the point at the bottom of the stripes just flop around over the buckle?

As far as what designs i like, I'm kinda partial to my custom Cap.

Hmmmm....

Firstly; superheroes don't have bulges. Anyone who's ever read "Normalman" knows that.

I think the shiney thing is SUPPOSED to represent armour. Chainmail is cool, but a nightmare to draw; especially if you're a realistic artist.

WHY does he have a gun? With the super-frizbee it's pretty superfluous isn't it?

Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes is the current most likely candidate given the fact that he's pretty much the central figure of the current Captain America series since the death of Steve Rogers.

Hawkeye has worn the Cap costume in the Fallen Son miniseries, but basically ended up telling Tony Stark to stuff it and went to join the New Avengers as the latest to pick up the Ronin identity. The previous issue showed Doc Strange invoking a spell evoking the true inner selves of the various New Avengers... Hawkeye's inner self was seen as Captain America. Most folks think this was decoy to help fuel fan speculation.

Falcon is the only other likely candidate, but I think he's kind of a dark horse right now behind the other two.

USAgent is busy with Omega Flight and has worn the Captain America identity quite recently in the pages of The New Invaders.


There has been one other Captain America replacement/fake in recent years that was introduced in the pages of the short lived Captain America and The Falcon ongoing series by Christopher Priest. A highly underrated run that suffered in launching with sub-par Bart Sears artwork.

Kevin Maguire was the first artist I recall that was crazy enough to draw each and every piece of chain/scale on cap's tunic...

I'm assuming it's what eventually broke him for monthly comics.

I feel the same way....if this starts to go down the road of stuff like Teenage Iron Man or Armored Spider-Man then I'm gone too.

On another point I'm curious why Ross was responsible for the redesign...Couldn't the regular team on the book have pulled it off?

I'd say it's because any project Ross is involved with tends to generate quite a bit of attention and discussion from the fans and comics/fandom news media, which is a marketing department's wet dream.

EB: Yes, this is for Captain America #34, the January issue. Alex's involvement in this came after they were working out the deal for the Invaders book, but that project coming along really gave us the bridge to asking Alex to do this design. When we talked about it, initially, I said to Tom it would just be a dream if we could get Alex Ross in on this, thinking there was no way in hell we'd be able to. But Tom asked and Alex turned out to be a big fan of what we've been doing on Cap, so he joined the party and really made this happen.
