Ted wasn't Beetle in the 40s, it was Dan Garret.

Bruce Timm and others said it was the radio show that kept them from using the Beetle, but apparently it was all versions of Blue Beetle. DC has apparently gotten around this now, given the multiple appearances of Jaime on B&B, as well as the one episode with Ted.

apparently in the 40s Fox Features Syndicate created a Blue Beetle Radio Show for a cookie company, and gave them broadcast rights INTO PERPETUITY.

this is why Ted never showed up on JLU.

now, they can PUBLISH Ted, but DC is in the process of creating an entertainment brand, and they are looking for properties that they can translate into other media.

which means Ted is right out, due to the previous agreement.

So, they created Jaime, who they own completely, and own all rights to, and they can market and promote any way they see fit.
I've always been confused on this matter....It's been brought up before.

I can see this being true with the Dan Garrett Beetle (who I believe is the original Fox version)....but Ted Kord's Beetle came out of Charlton. Doesn't DC own the Charlton characters lock, stock and barrel now?

If there were broadcast rights issues the Blue Beetle for JLU, they've obviously been resolved seeing as Ted and Jaime have appeared on TV.

If DC Entertainmet had to pay off a cookie company, I guess that would be why they are so anxious to utilize the property. Although I'm sure they have already recouped some of it with Brave and Bold toys (the Bug vehicle is quite cool).
