Brightest Day, What did you think?

From a coolness standpoint, I thought the first issue was great. It's nice to get a little taste of GL, Sinestro, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Firestorm, Hawkman all in one place.

The book does read a little choppy and the art kind of rides the roller coaster, too, but I think you have to kind of look at the book as an anthology at the moment. I'm sure the stories will begin to intersect more clearly at some point and at that point the read would likely be more fluid.

All isn't sunshine and rainbows for the heroes who came back. Folks who don't what to see graphic violence that Johns has used before in various places won't like some of the stuff that happens here.

Johns/Tomasi have an affinity for Aquaman and he comes off very well in this issue. Aman actually uses something that I don't recall him every using before and it makes sense and was cool to me. It's Pprobably my favorite part of the issue other than a villain who shows up and does some particularly nasty things.

Hal and Sinestro have a nice moment, too, that has been previewed elsewhere.

A cool first issue and a promising start, but a bit flawed. Considering some of the execution problems, I'm wondering if this should be a monthly instead of a bimonthly. Or possibly Johns should have taken an issue and then Tomasi taken the next and the two split the characters up between them.

Thanks for kinda previewing this without giving anything away. I didn't make it to a shop today, so I missed out. Looking forward to this. I hope this leads the way to an Aquaman regular series with perhaps Ries or Finch on art duties.

Looks like Manta is the bad guy to look out for! Quite the unexpected and chilling scene before you realize he's Manta!

I was attempting to not give away Black Manta's appearance, but he does some truly nasty things in this book when he learns Arthur has returned. It was like he was OK when Aman was dead but the second he found out Aman was alive his homicidal and pyromanical characteristics erupted.

Black Manta is undoubtedly Aquaman's greatest foe....he killed Arthur Jr. after all. When you accomplish something like that, Ocean Master just seems like a crybaby piker....

I'm really looking forward to seeing how Johns fills out Manta's back-story and motivations. I think his villain make-overs are generally quite compelling. It would appear that they are jettisoning the "Malcolm X of the Sea" angle, which might be for the best.

Anyone else think Manta's got some Red Lantern Rage going on?

I think so...Sadly I consider Fisherman, Aquaman's #3 villain, behind Manta and Orm I mean, really, who else IS there that's old-school cool?
The even had to usurp a Green Lantern foe back in the 70s to be an Aquaman foe...The Shark...although that kinda makes sense.

^^ I got nothing past those three for Aquaman. Maybe whoever writes the new series could confiscate a few from the Filmation cartoon. Seems like Ra's Al Ghul would make for a good one, too. Be an interesting story to see two pro environment guys butt heads.

I'm waiting to get this in collected form. All these big events, combined with my regular books, is getting to be expensive.
I'm glad they're revamping Black Manta. I don't really read Aquaman, but I picked up some of the Rick Veitch run, and some of the stuff that happened with him was lousy.
