From a coolness standpoint, I thought the first issue was great. It's nice to get a little taste of GL, Sinestro, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Firestorm, Hawkman all in one place.
The book does read a little choppy and the art kind of rides the roller coaster, too, but I think you have to kind of look at the book as an anthology at the moment. I'm sure the stories will begin to intersect more clearly at some point and at that point the read would likely be more fluid.
All isn't sunshine and rainbows for the heroes who came back. Folks who don't what to see graphic violence that Johns has used before in various places won't like some of the stuff that happens here.
Johns/Tomasi have an affinity for Aquaman and he comes off very well in this issue. Aman actually uses something that I don't recall him every using before and it makes sense and was cool to me. It's Pprobably my favorite part of the issue other than a villain who shows up and does some particularly nasty things.
Hal and Sinestro have a nice moment, too, that has been previewed elsewhere.
A cool first issue and a promising start, but a bit flawed. Considering some of the execution problems, I'm wondering if this should be a monthly instead of a bimonthly. Or possibly Johns should have taken an issue and then Tomasi taken the next and the two split the characters up between them.
