I don't recall a series but seem to remember a special that sounds like what you are talking about. There was also a movie in the late 80's or early 90's about Archie returning to Riverdale or something along those lines.

I think they need to kill Archie off ... then bring him back to life, but only with all new found super powers. Then after the story line doesn't make a hit with fans ... make him go back to normal and pretend the whole story line never happened lol :biggring:

Really it's hard to beat a simple Archie comic, I know I have a few around here somewhere that were my sister's, but they were like made for Christian kids ... so it was like archie going to sunday school etc.

I had completely forgotten about that show! I have such a vague memory of it.

The Archie Situation Comedy Musical Variety Show (1978) (TV)
            Archie Andrews
Archie brought his friends to live-action television in two ABC specials -- The Archie Situation Comedy Musical Variety Show and Archie (an installment of ABC Saturday Comedy Special).

Archie aired on on December 19, 1976. Dennis Bowen plays Archie in both specials. He had a recurring role as Todd Ludlow on Welcome Back, Kotter. Gordon Jump (WKRP in Cincinnati) plays Mr. Andrews. Audrey Landers (Dallas) plays Betty.

Initially, the producers circulated David Caruso’s name as the actor who would portray Archie. Mark Evanier clarified the misunderstanding over Caruso’s involvement in an article for Comic Buyer’s Guide (August 25, 1995). Evanier states that while Caruso was set to play the title character, a contract dispute occurred the day before rehearsals began and long after the producers distributed press and promotional materials. Evanier was a Story Editor on Kotter and worked on the Archie production staff.

Variety reviewed Archie in its December 22, 1976 issue. The review gave encouraging comments.

Overall, one got the feeling that the special had come close to achieving its original goals and might yet turn up on ABC’s prime-time sked [schedule] -- possibly as a summer skein [series].

Such was not the case, though ABC aired the second special, The Archie Situation Comedy Musical Variety Show, on August 5, 1978.
A second attempt to bring to life the comic strip "Archie." The program follows events in the lives of Archie Andrews and his friends, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Reggie Mantle, and Jughead Jones. In the second pilot, which also features the characters in a series of songs, Archie seeks a way to convince his father to let him buy a used sports car.

I have been looking for those for years! You're the only person who vaguely even remembers them.

They were two TV specials, they may have been busted pilots:

First One- Archie wants to go to a concert but can't afford it (he works in Pop Tates) Reggie gets tickets but as luck may have it, the band's van breaks down in front of the Choklit Shop. Moose lifts the van while the guys change the tire and get a free concert. Lots of Laugh in Style sketchs thrown in the middle.

Second One- Not funny at all, weird sketches about Archie "Finding Himself".

The guy who played Jughead popped up a lot on 70s TV, he played Julie's boyfriend on "One Day at a Time"

Wow I haven't seen that since it happened. I was supremely bothered that he did not have squares on the side of his head. I remember my sister calling me an idiot.

Yep, that's it. I remember Betty showing up to Veronica's slumber party in Dr. Denton's PJs and I found out Jughead's real name is Forsythe.

It was called "Pureheart the Powerful," but he didn't die first. (I don't THINK he did, anyhoo....)
