What are the best Sherlock Holmes Comics?

    Inspired by TrueDave.

Not really comics per say other than the floppy format, but these were so wonderfully illustrated by Dan Day...

I'm quite fond of this one...

I always liked the DC Comics 1970s one-shot, always had a thing for ER Cruz' art:

The Marvel B&W magazines were pretty good too.

But my favorite Sherlock Holmes appearance?

The only Sherlocks beyond the DC one I ever saw were the old Dell/Gold Key books. They were typical of the publishers other stuff. Decent art, boring presentation, simple story.

^ Yup! That's the one I was thinking of too...Slam Bradley and the Elongated Man guest-starred too IIRC. I've always thought that the Mike W. Barr/Alan Davis run on Detective was vastly under-rated.

LOVED their run. Barr totally gets Batman. He's the chummy Dick Sprang-near-Adam West Batman, AND the grim O'Neil/Adams Batman all in one. It was classic, Fingeresque Batman for modern times. And Davis is one of the absolute masters of the craft. His Adams influences don't hurt on Batman either.

Too bad it was so short. DC should have thrown a ton of money at them. It was probably too "light" for the growing darkness at DC though.

Thank you Samurai! Best Artwork in a comic I have ever seen. Well best black and white cross hatching. The flat picture refrences can be a bit off putting and one of the brother isnt as good an illustrator as the other . The layout is very nice how the panels swirl around th epage. Later issues stopped having painted covers and the inside art became single panel s.

These were all ( except maybe one) Conan Doyle Stories. Holmes is drawn as the Basil Rathbone version.

I love it because I would love to ink and cross hatch like Day.

Sherlock Holmes vs the Joker? I have always been curious about that sries!

I have a great fondness for this recent graphic novel which depicts Holmes and Watson as completely delusional madmen who somehow "solve" the imaginary case they embark on.

Love the Mad parody as well.

Answered my own question....Barr and Davis started Batman Year Two in 'Tec but Davis was replaced with McFaralane after the 1st part. After Year Two, Barr hung on for a Crime Doctor story and a 2-part Two-Face story and then he was gone too. Wagner and Breyfogle picked up the reigns after that.

My memory is a bit foggy of that particular era of DC, but didn't Barr and Davis jump from Batman and The Outsiders?

For me the disappointment was having MacFarlane replace Davis on Batman Year 2. What happened there? Was this when Davis got on The X-Men/New Mutants/Excaliber? It was nice that they got Davis back for the sequel. Reaper was a great character.
