Why I left comics :-(

I stopped reading for several reasons.
1. Import comics are about $4 here. Man, that's expensive.
2. I'm fed up with reboots, starting from issue one. I like the history, I like reading Avengers 721!
3. I'm fed up with a million storylines in one book, characters dying/resurrecting/going from bad to good to bad again.
4. They fill each page to the gills with images, and I like clean and clear panels. Is more really that much better?
It reminds me of all those CG movies. Too frigging much!
It's like I'm reading comics by Michael Bay....
So I quit.
I now look for older issues. I'm hunting for old Iron Man, Avengers, etc.
I can fill a lifetime with those.....

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...Comment

Been about 10 years since I stopped buying comics. I've been buying the DC Showcase classics and enjoying the Batman and Superman stories from the 50s/60s
Think B.A. Where did you hide the Megos?Comment

Those DC Mad Archives are absolutely gorgeous. Kurtzman and co's work is finally in a format suited to the material. As much as I loved the black and white paperbacks and Mad Super Special bound in reprints and even the Magazine format reprints from a few years back, it's finally great to see the entirety of the material at this size in a permanent quality package.
They need to release these on a faster schedule.
The recent Kurtzman coffee table book is a jaw-dropper for me.
OHH - speaking of which, I just picked myself up a little Christmas gift: Amazon.com: MAD's Greatest Artists: The Completely MAD Don Martin (MAD's Greatest Artists Series) (9780762430505): Don Martin: Books
Originally it was a fortune - but I found one at a book clearance place for $40! It makes me so happy it's crazy!Comment

I read all the back issues on Adobe acrobat. I have been collecting all of the Marvel ones.
They are basically scanned comic books from front cover through the book, page by page to the end. I love the old stories from Hulk, Fantastic Four, Ironman, Defenders, Avengers, Captain America and Spiderman from the 70s and onward...before that, there seemed to be a cheese factor.
Awhile ago, some fella put up a bunch of DC ones on eBay and sold them. I have not seen him lately. Probably got his hand slapped since DC didn't officially release Adobe scanned version of their comics. Some guy with a lot of free time on his hand must have decided to scan his books. Lots of those!More custom Mego madness on Facebook right here...

I still buy some new books every week but nothing like I used to. I spend a lot of the money I used to spend in new books buying late 70's to mid 80's book at a bargain sometimes, as low as $1. I've also been trying to finally finish my amazing spider-man run with lower grade (but complete) issues.Comment

So.... how many of you guys who're lamenting the content of current superhero books loved "The Dark Knight Returns" and "The Watchmen?"
Maybe I'm biased, but I feel super hero comics had really reached a good middle-ground in the late 70s/early 80s. Most were written in a way that an adult could enjoy them, with character development and situations that didn't insult anyone's intelligence. But there was little that was inappropriate for children. Much like the Timm DCU animated series.

I don't lament Watchmen, I love it, but never in my life have I said "I wish all comics were like this" I love Dark beer but I mostly drink Lager.
Alan Moore laments writing Watchmen however, the imitation of his work has kind of killed the thing he loved.Places to find PlaidStallions online: https://linktr.ee/Plaidstallions

Oh please, that's a weak argument. While I never got into Dark Knight, there was a reason Watchmen was it's own universe, DC had the sense then that it wasn't in their canon.

What bothered me afterwards is how much that type of dark character started appearing in other main stream characters. I started seeing Flawed heros with no Super in them and the air was taken out of the fun of being one.
Funny I thought of the Darknight as a stand alone story not cannon with the regular Batman and I saw how Miller's Take on the character crept into the books....which I had a distaste for.Comment
