    The one run that really nailed the chain mail look was John Byrne inked by Joe Rubenstein.

      Yeah, Byrne and Rubenstein were great on Cap. Great stories by Stern too. I recall them emphasizing the mail costume in the great Baron Blood two-parter. The Baron tries to bite Cap's neck, but he can't penetrate through the chain/scale mail!

          Maguire's rendering was a great look, I don't know if other artist's do it as well. The mail shirt, half helmet and the non-round shield make for that cool golden age feel. Each artist is going to draw what his style dictates, so maybe there was never a standard from Marvel on that detail of the mail (scale or chain)?

            Off screen...which makes it even more dramatic. You only see the shadows and hear the sound effect I think. Stern's captions describing it are great as well. How a potentially gory scene in a comic SHOULD be done. Tasteful, and more effective! For how not to do it, check out that Punisher/Dakken debacle posted on this forum elsewhere.
