Yeah, Byrne and Rubenstein were great on Cap. Great stories by Stern too. I recall them emphasizing the mail costume in the great Baron Blood two-parter. The Baron tries to bite Cap's neck, but he can't penetrate through the chain/scale mail! The one run that really nailed the chain mail look was John Byrne inked by Joe Rubenstein.

Maguire's rendering was a great look, I don't know if other artist's do it as well. The mail shirt, half helmet and the non-round shield make for that cool golden age feel. Each artist is going to draw what his style dictates, so maybe there was never a standard from Marvel on that detail of the mail (scale or chain)?sigpic "It's like you're unravelling a big cable-knit sweater that someone keeps knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting..."

Off screen...which makes it even more dramatic. You only see the shadows and hear the sound effect I think. Stern's captions describing it are great as well. How a potentially gory scene in a comic SHOULD be done. Tasteful, and more effective! For how not to do it, check out that Punisher/Dakken debacle posted on this forum elsewhere. And then Cap decapitates the Baron wth his shield....Awesome!
