They keep feeling the need to "modernize" the look of Cap's uniform in flashbacks and such.....

Scale mail. It seems that Marvel is trying to retcon the heavy scale mail half shirt back to his WWII adventures. I don't have a problem with it.
        Hey! Check out the pictures.

So Cap is really back now then? Wonder what costume/name Bucky will adopt now-- Nomad perhaps?

^ Not quite.....Cap's back but the Red SKull is in control of the body....as for Nomad, the girl Bucky from the Heroes Reborn world has picked up that moniker.

I think you can trace the emphasis on the scale mail back to Kevin Maguire's interpretation in "The Adventures of Captain America" prestige mini from 1990. He did it to differentiate Cap's early version of his custom (where the cowl doesn't connect to the shirt). I kind of like it, but some make it look like he has roofing shingles all over his upper torso.

I like it...it's basically Cap's version of a Kevlar Vest. He might be super strong...but he's not Bullet proof.

                      Hmmmm....

Wasn't it always supposed to be chain mail? That's why they drew him with that stippling effect.

So.... is that when they went with scale mail?

No, it's always supposed to have been some kind of mail, but Maguire was the first to actually try and actually render each individual scale and go for some sort of realism with it. Before him, everyone seemed content just draw a few random U-shaped squiggles and call it good.

I always called it chain mail, but I think scale mail is a more accurate term. Isn't chain mail like a chain, with a bunch of open loops woven really tightly?

Chain Mail,.. is Like what Knights wear...
Scale Mail to Me,.. is the "U" Drawing on a Shirt, like Aquaman or Cap.
Thats what it is to me...

There was a SideShow Cap Statue, as well as several Ross Pieces that really kinda gave the Chain Mail the Look, it was supposed to Have. I don't think this Artist is introducing a new Concept..., it's just something that has only been scene here or there to begin with.

I think it was always suppost to be chain Mail..., but it is just something not many could draw correctly.

I think so too. Seem to recall they referred to it as such back in the Handbook to the Marvel Universe.
