    Comics Colouring

Just to break off a point of discussion in another thread, we've seen the rise of the comic book colourists in the past couple of decades with the advent of the computer as the tool of choice, and comic book publishing evolving past the days of four colour dots.

Most colourists can't be at the level of Richard Isanove or Laura Martin, but what should the line of standards be when the demand probably outstrips the level of professionalism required for the job?

Which comics do you think are coloured well? Who are the best colourists?

What is their role? To merely enhance what is already there, or to add their contribution as an artistic collaborator? At what point does a colourist start to get in the way of the penciller/inker? What about the cases where the colourist is colouring over pencils?

Who were your favourite colourist from the good ol' days of four colour, and have they evolved with the new technology? (What happened to Tatjana Wood? Where is she these days? Particularly since she was at the forefront of the Baxter/New Format movement!)

The only one I know by name right now is Dave Stewart. Simple palette, more old school colorist. Doesn't try to over do it like some of the Alex Ross wannabes do.

I'm getting to the point where I despise many of the modern colorists....I'm not a big fan of all the filters and whatnot they're pulling out....I'm old-school and I prefer the old method in most cases. And it REALLY bugs me when they (MARVEL) reprint an old story but use modern computer coloring. Bleech! And I think Marvel suffers more than DC with the modern computer coloring epidemic....

Marvel definitely overdoes the computer coloring, as compared to DC. I picked up the first two issues of Superman: Secret Origin, and I think that is just the right balance of modern color, while still preserving the basics lights and darks of comic art. All the comic art with no blacks and earthy tones is REALLY getting old, and it's just plain ugly, honestly. It was a neat effect at first, but everyone jumping on it was not a good thing.

Not sure if she did all the coloring....but she was awesome, becoming a good penciler and inker in her own right and was inducted in Will Eisners Hall of fame.

I like old school coloring all the way, I agree with you guys that the Marvel re-coloring and the filters (I hate when they blur a panel) are not wanted, especially in reprints. I have the Neal Adams Marvel Visions, and the coloring ruins the art, in my opinion.

She deserved that honour. Now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure she coloured all of EC's New Trend and New Direction books (except some cover artists sometimes coloured their own covers), but I'm not sure about all of the Pre-Trend stuff. She's definitely a legend.

I'm with you BK! I go back and look at my old Comics(which are stored in a dry place)...and they're so faded. I LOVE the new color, and could never go back to the four colored dot method(and in the TB backs I have, the dots show up even more!).
