    Hmmmm....

I grew up with stuff like Heavy Metal; so I was spoiled on full process, painted colour right from the get go. Mainstream books always looked muddy and cluttered to me.

Computer or human, it can still look over done.

I'm sure you must have noticed by now what with all the boxes you've got, that I recolor the artwork :

          1) to get rid of that comic book dot-pattern effect, which doesn't necessarily translate well in to packaged material IMO, especially when redrawing portions of the artwork or blowing up said artwork

          2) at no point am I using any fancy photoshop filters to supposedly "enhance" the artwork...If the line art is solid on it's own,it needs no enhancing IMO.

The trick is knowing when something looks over-done, which is a skill many of today's colorists seem to be lacking IMO....

Of course, sometimes some people request certain artwork that has already been filtered to death and there's no real line art to work with as far as re-coloring goes, so I just go with what they gave me with no alterations...but I must say I'd prefer it the other way myself. Case in point, the recent "Juggie" box.

It wasn't that colorists ventured "out of the lines"....the registration was off at the printer's....had nothing to do with the colorist. Computer coloring registration can be off as well....

Hey Man,.. I kinda look at that as "Your Job" That I pay you for.
I really don't know a Damn thing about what you do, and to be honest, really have no interest in it..., because you do such an Outstanding Job everytime you come to the Table. But as far as the Juggy art,.. I just Kinda try & Pitch you a Version I am Making of Something,.. If you decide to go another route,.. I am pretty confident you would get me something I would want, or close to it. I am not one of these control Freaks out there like others, when I know Nothing about what you do. Feel Me ?

            I have never scene this..
I think Colorists today Have Evolved just like anything Else in Life. Pages come to life as if you are Reading a Cartoon Movie. Bland Dull colors of the Past is Just horrible compaired to what's being done today..., But then again, I am about 10 to 15 yrs younger than Most who replied in this thread..., & Thus I really Haven't reached the Age of " Yeah, This Is Crap..... It was better when, and it will never be better" .

I know...just busting your chops......cuz you brought it up

In most cases I try and give you something close to your initial request and it all works out. There have been other folk though that are adamant about particular artwork they've chosen even though it may be difficult to work with in the context of a box or card. But they're paying for it so my opinion on coloring styles really doesn't matter if they're happy with it. Just not my personal perference.

It all depends on the artwork actually....the Juggernaut there was no way to "re-color" it as I normally do, but the Gary Frank Superman I was able to re-color, even though it had been original photoshopped a bit by the colorist. But that's because the line-art was strong to begin with. I guess that's my point, really....sometimes the over-coloring can take away from the artwork itself instead of helping it out.....

You Know,.. I do understand by what you mean about stuff being filtered... While researching Emblems,.. if colors are off,.. ( if I was even able to find it) , I put them into Photoshop, then change the colors. Sometimes the pics are so damn filtered, I can't even use them.

She's brilliant. I remember reading an interview with Miller about how she chose to turn the graveyard fight in Elektra Lives Again from a night time scene to an early morning for an even more stark and chilling effect than he ever could have envisioned.

If I'm recalling correctly, at that the time, Marvel was not able to satisfactorily replicate the subtleties and details of her painted colours which is why the original hardback printing of Elektra Lives Again was farmed out to Graffiti.

I don't know how many are reading Blackest Night, but I want to use it as an example how good modern coloring techniques can be if used properly.
