Have any of them ever heard the expression, "Less is more"?

David Mazzucchelli's work on Batman:Year 1 is a perfect example of simplicity at it's finest. I read that over twenty years ago, and it floors me to this day.
At the time, I didn't think there were guys like that still around. It got me excited about comics again, and I was looking forward to seeing other artists' whose work pulled me in like that.

    Sadly, I'm still waiting.
Many younger artist ape whatever is trendy art style is happening at the time. That's how they find work. Eventually the really good ones find their own style and go from there....

I personally think a lot of the newer artist have no weight on their line work. Looks like they draw everything with a ball point pen. No life whats so ever in the drawing then they use the computer to enhance a lifeless drawing. That's why the old school stuff looks a thousand times better.

More weight to the art.......Plus tooooooooo many guys rely on Pictures to draw and trace from. I don't want to see your neighbor playing Batman I want to see you pull that out of your mind not an obvious pose....

I am Making my Way threw the Pages of a Legion of 3 Worlds right now..., & I gotta Say,.. I don't think anyone Has ever, ever Drawn the Multi-character Cross-Overs the Way Perez seems to Have the Ability to. That Man is Bad Flipp'in Arse. He can literally throw over 100 characters in a Book,.. & the character Drawing still look so very Clean and Perfect. It's truley amazing Stuff.

I really Enjoyed Benes' work on Blackest Night Teen Titans. I think it's the best stuff He ever has Done..., it was great, to mix Sexy with Horror has always apealed to Me..., and he did a nice Job... Same can be said with Reis on Blackest Night,.. then add the Idea of Sci-Fi into the Book with The Lantern Nonsense as well, & His Style has me very Captivated.

Ed Mcguinness has a Very comicbooky/Cartoon Style that really Apeals to Me. I am Having a Blast reading Hulk..., & in the Last 2 Issues, Churchill was filling in for him,.. & was able to "Moch" his Style, which was neat stuff for Me.

I like Schiver very much,.. Just wish that Flipp'in Flash Book would come out already..., looks like from the New Pics of him..., he seems to be spending a bit more Time eating Doughnuts,.. rather than working.

Gary Frank is the Man, Big time , with His Chris Reeves-esque Superman !!!

Bong Dazo..., How could you not like a Guy with BONG In his 1st Name ?. ... Seriously though..., for those that don't Know,.. He's drawing Deadpool : A Merc witha Mouth. It's great stuff. Real Cartoony,.. & Lots of Action, Crazyness & A Chick with Big Boobs Half Dressed, Savage Land... fun Stuff.

The Team of Mike Choi,.. & Sonia Oback in the Pages of X-Force has extreme attention to detail,.. as well as everything is so life like,.. for the more so serious story that Yost has with the Group.

Mike D ! ...His MoonStone/Ms. Marvel is THE Hotest Chick in Comicbooks Right Now !

Dan Jurgens is right up there with Lopez in my book , as far as being the Most Under Appreciated Artist Ever. This Guy is Only getting Better,.. & BoosterGold Rocks because of Him !!!!

I can look at Alex Ross' Work all Day long, as fas as a being Visual Stunning..., Just wish I was more so into the Stories, rather than buying Pin-Up Nonsense

I will always have a Place in my Heart for Lee & Silvestri,.. & do pick up thier stuff,.. when they do stuff. ... Ever Since they used to Alternate on Uncanny X-Men...

Borrow Does some real Nice work On Titans..., & saved the book for me, from my drop list. I like the new direction somewhat,.. & love his pencils

& Finally... Our Boy Sir ART !!!! AWWWWWWWWW YEAH !!! Nuff said.

BTW... I disagree with any Nonsense of Critisim towards the Talented Artists of Today. By grouping them as a collective "Whole" & saying anything,.. with Everyone involved...., Obviously,.. people are not going out there & ACTUALLY trying to Get Involved with the Search of something to thier Liking. There are Hundreds of New Books Published Every Month,.. from New Styles, to Old. From Painted, Realistic, Cartoon & Computerized. From Heavy Shading, to Bright & Colorful Pics. From Adult Stories to Kiddie Stories. I don't buy it for a second,.. that there is Absolutey Nothing out there that someone doesn't like. The Statement woulda been more so Believable imo in the Late 90's..., them were slim Pickings then.

No reason to stand around waiting! (or to talk about Mazzucchelli in the past tense)

You might be interested to know that Mazzucchelli's is still around and has been doing comics for the past twenty years! You'll be delighted to know that he's even streamlined his style much more than in Batman Y1.

Go check out any of these...

In all honesty, I would rather have a veteran artist on a book these days then any of the new guys...and by new, I mean anyone that has shown up in books in the last 5 - 7 years. The sad part is that there has been age discrimination within the comic industry for years. Pathetic if you ask me. The only fairly new artist, and they've been around for more than the last 5 - 7 years, that I would even think about following there careers by picking up everything they do are probably Frank Cho (who is just an all around cool guy to hang around at a show) and Gene Ha. That's it.

Veterans I would buy whatever book they do:

                      George Perez
                      Jerry Ordway
                      Jim Starlin
                      Walt Simonson
                      Mike Grell

The newer artist really aren't that good. Some of the Marvel stuff that I've seen lately...My nephew could draw better and he's 11. Just absolutely pathetic stuff in some cases.
"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
                      The beauty that surrounds them
                      Isn't it a pity".

                      - "Isn't It A Pity"

It's not hard to show Superman majestically flying through the air, when you have photoshop doing the sky, clouds, sun, etc, for you. What's really crazy is that they have all these tools at their disposal, and some of them can't make a deadline to save their life.

Hey, I'm not trying to offend anyone. People like what they like. It just amazes me that the big two, who could get just about anyone they wanted(not to mention what they charge),wouldn't have the best of the best.
Excellent points...and just to point out many of the artist that are being listed are not current artist many have been in the biz 10 to twenty years...When I read the thread and it said current I thought new artist.

Getting back you're so right so sorry but I'm tired of seeing computer enhanced drawings especially with color. Most of the time the original is bare and doesn't look like much because of the enhancements.

I tell everyone when going to shows try looking at original artwork especially Old school masters. The pages are incredible to look at. In their original size. Many times the printed artwork looks horrible and color obscures the Lush line work.

I got too see Alex Raymonds work up close and he puts many artist to sleep incredible lush brush work. When I got to meet Dave Stevens I had seen some of his Rocketeer Pages unfreeking believable the amount of beautiful line work he had in his Illustrations.

Most of the time when i see the newer artist i see a lot of nothing relying too much on color to carry the Illustration and many of them can't ink properly with a dip pen or ink brush. I see them using markers??? Wow how lazy!!

I'm of the opinion tools are tools, whether you use a computer or a brush or a stick that you've burnt the end of, a good artist can do amazing things with whatever he has on hand. Truer now than ever before now that imaging technology in the publishing field (both traditional print and digital) can reproduce just about anything at a relatively low cost to consumers, it's no longer a world of just black and white line art with four colors mixed and matched in an array of dots.

Just look at what Frank Cho does with A BALLPOINT PEN! He's even admitted to using Bics and the crappy disposables you get free in your hotel room for some of these (and fearing that they run out before he can finish). Absolutely mind-boggling to me.

Inspired by Frank Cho art? Read an inspiring biography of Frank Cho, the author of the book Apes and Babes, and a person who reached the top with no experience!

Frank Co can draw sexy women with a Crappy Crayon or lint dipped in ink lol!

He is above the norm and one of the best Illustrators in the biz.

That's not who I'm talking about...Have you seen the Art in Marvel's Timely comics line??
My goodness I've never seen so many crap artist on so many books...the reprints in those book are 100 times better than the new stuff......

Relatively low cost to consumers.....what comics are cheap now???? average comic now are 2.99 and up that's Cheap????

Oh and my Point about ball point pens was....the ink used in them fades away as time goes by or if God forbid the art gets wet it will run. That's why Ink should be used....

I wouldn't buy original art done in Ball point Pen or marker.........
