Favorite current artist

I'm talking about someone who is actively drawing a book as I write this. I guess JIm Lee would count, but he hasn't had regular work for a little while. I really didn't want to flip-flop around with this myself, but I have a tie.

Gary Frank - I'll admit to not liking his Superman and Legion book, but he has really grown on me with the Braniac storyline and now Secret Orogins. It's amazing to see his evolution and drastic change of style. There is relatively nothing of his old style he started out with when he did Hulk with ptere David. I loved his stuff then, but I'm a serious fan now. His hyper realism and ability to make his characters look like real people with his light, feathery line weight is amazing.

Ivan Reis - This guy is a stud. His attention to detail is reminiscent of George Perez and his pencilling style is highly influenced by Neal Adams. His layouts, use of perstective and shadow are among the best in the industry. He's might be the best artist DC has, so they would be well-advised to keep him locked down under contract for many, many years. Hey, maybe he could draw Aquaman as written by Johns...

Duncan Fegredo, he's doing the art on the regular Hellboy book. Wish Mignola would get back to the art.

I guess if we are talking an active monthly artist, then Ivan Reis is up there. I also enjoy Jurgens on Booster Gold.

If we are talking a guy who is still out there and jumps on major projects every so often, then George Perez hands down.

None. never seen so many crap artist on comic books at one time and I'm talking about most artist from this decade. It's one of the reasons I quit buying comics. Price is the other reason. I buy only the kiddie stuff for my daughter

I agree with you on Gary Frank, Scott....he's who first came to mind for me.......I also dig Bryan Hitch, Ethan Van Sciver and Ivan Reis.

I have no idea who most of them are but I've seen alot of great stuff and alot of awful stuff recently. I'd say it's about the same ratio as 10 - 20 years ago.

To me George Perez is the 1 and always #1 artist.

But if we are talking currently on a book i'd go with Ivan Reis or Ethan Van Scriver or Ed Benes.

a couple of other notables i'm not sure what they are doing... Rags Morales and Phil Jimenez.

These artists are ones that I consistently like and on just about anything:

Amanda Conner (Power Girl)
Darwyn Cooke (New Frontier)
Jordi Bernet (Jonah Hex)

I think what I really prefer about their art is the simplicity. Many of today's artists suffer from over-rendering, lots of little details & lines. An artist that can do the same effect with two lines instead of ten is the more talented in my opinion. A group from the Will Eisner-Alex Toth school of comics.

I'd have to agree with Johnnystorm on Amanda Conner. I love her stuff and I've been buying Power Girl just for it.

My favorite artist right now I think only does covers. Supergirl specifically. His name is Joshua Middleton. I started buying Supergirl again because I couldn't take my eyes off the covers. But I'm really enjoying the New Krypton/World Without Superman stories.
