You know, I'm a fan of Alex Ross (see my avatar), but hat Claw/Sonja cover was one of his weakest. Claw's anatomy looks way off, and Sonja's eyes are just buggy. Women aren't his strong point anyhow.

I always thought of him as Burt Reynolds.

Makes sense now that you've pointed it out, even his costume is similar enough.

Y'know.... now that you mention it yeah. Not sure I'd WANT them to do the Vertigo version.... but still; a certain, masochistic part of me is curious now.
Part of me wonders if Deadenders might have started out as a Swing with Scooter proposal?

It's not out of the realm of possibility given the fact that Ed Brubaker was fresh off of Prez and Vertigo was scraping around for ANY obscure character they could think to Vertigoize.

Although the oddness of these characters really seemed to inspire Neil Gaiman.

I mean who'd have ever thought Element Girl could be so poignant?

They did redo Vartox in the late 90's or early 2000's if i'm correct. I know he did appear in the last issues of the silver age Superman story where Lex and Brainiac died as a miner character in 85. I always thought of him and Ultraa as close characters of Superman. ( I know Ultraa was originally from Earth-Prime which they really didn't bring up with Superman-Prime which would of been a great story!)

I appreciate it too. It helps distract from the man-diaper.

                        Not ENOUGH; but it helps.

And yeah; what DID happen to the Green Team? maybe the kid with the pistols went nuts on the plane....?

They realized they were just another in a string of Joe Simon-created (or co-created) boy bands and broke away from him because the Boys Ranch kids were getting better residuals. After that, they started their own record label and went broke.

They've appeared as forgotten background characters in Animal Man during Morrison's run (the "Limbo" arc) and in Ambush Bug. And Karl Kesel used them in a Superman story where they met up briefly with the Dingbats of Danger Street (another 1st Issue Special team that went nowhere) and the legendary Newsboy Legion.

Probably the only issue of 1st Issue Special that NEVER gets mentioned....even Lady Cop gets more play in the press. Joe Simon's stuff for DC at that time period was absolutely terrible...obviously Jack Kirby was the more prolific of the duo...but even he had some 1st Issue Special clunkers (but at least his have been integrated in the DCU since then).

It's been said that then DC publisher Carmine Infantino had no intention of giving any of the 1st Issue Special try-outs their own series....it was probably just a quick way to burn off sub-par inventory and turn a quick buck by plastering 1st ISSUE SPECIAL on the cover.
