I'm a Silver Age junkie and although I don't want to go back to stuff like Batman fighting aliens every issue I would like to see a little more "light" in the DC Universe (Marvel too for that matter). I'm just burned out on the constant villain one-up-manship we're seeing over the heroes lately. It just keeps getting darker and darker and the heroes are losing ground and not becoming as fun to read anymore. You can only take so much darkness before it gets boring. IMO the villain should definitely be threatening (how many times can Captain Cold steal jewelry for chrissakes?) but the hero should be able to overcome his villainy eventually. But the way things are going our heroes have been getting their asses handed to them since Identity Crisis (DC) and Avengers Disassembled (Marvel) with no end in sight. That's over 5 years of whoopass on the heroes. That being said.....

I'm really pumped for Blackest Night and I'm hoping Geoff Johns doesn't let me down. Yeah some of the violence may not be everybody's cup of tea, but I think the positives in his writing definitely outweigh the negatives.

This may be seen by some as a horror story but rest assured that it's NOTHING like Marvel Zombies. There IS a light at the end of the tunnel....and I'm thinking it's WHITE. I feel that Johns has crafted a great backstory with Black Hand, who let's face it was a cliche villain in more ways that one. This guy finally has substance and is a formidable foe for GL. I don't think you can ever turn back the hands on the clock again and have him conducting crimes based on old cliches...he's too far gone now!

Hopefully whatever coolness Johns lays down with all of this STICKS and we don't see another Jim Starlin Hawkman Special undoing it all a few weeks later. I for one am hoping that we get back nice and shiny BUT original versions of Aquaman, J'onn J'onzz and Firestorm out of it. Cuz let's face it....the updates and new versions didn't take after One Year Later and just SUCKED! I'd also be down for a return of the Ted Kord Blue Beetle but I think that's wishful thinking....DC seems to have too much invested now in the Jamie Reyes version. So if Ted has to be sacrificed once again for other heroes to make their return, I'm cool with that.

If anyone is skeptical about reading this, my suggestion is start with Green Lantern #43....that will make you sit up and take notice....Black Hand is f'ed up! But it's cool! And then head straight into Blackest Night #1. You can by the multitude of cross-overs but if you're not sure if it's gonna be your cup of tea, just stick to the main 8 issue mini. Johns is a good enough story teller that I don't think you'll feel lost by just reading the main mini.

I agree...I thought that as well. I once told my Buddy Jay the Kids don't read Comics anymore...and he said: "Kids didn't abandon Comics...Comics abandon Kids". He has a very good Point.

Being an Adult(most of the time)...I'm glad for the evolution of Comics. But I suppose there could be a middle ground somewhere? However... DC does make "kid Friendly" Comics. DC makes Comics of their Animated TV Shows. And Marvel has Spiderman Family, FF Family, etc...

Problem is getting kids to read them...or even be interested. I have a 7 year old daughter who will not read them, even though she has seen me reading comics since day one. She goes to the comic shop with me, watches stuff like Brave & Bold with me, but hand her the book and she tosses it and goes off to watch I-Carly. Frustrates the heck outta me.

I think the bigger issue for us long time readers is getting a series we like done without event distractions, editorial meddling, and boneheaded revamps.

There ARE good series out there- my favorites include:

DC has Jonah Hex, Secret Six, Booster Gold, House of Mystery, Green Lantern, Batman: The Brave & the Bold.
Marvel has Agents of Atlas, Captain America, Iron Fist.
Dynamite has Lone Ranger, Moonstone has Kolchak, IDW has Doctor Who, Boom has Cars, Incredibles.

If I had to choose, Secret Six is probably DC's best title right now. Gail Simone is a great writer- she was great on Birds of Prey until editorial meddling sunk the book. Hex has been good since #1- gore & violence are excessive, but it's an expectation of reading the title, not a shock move as in most other DC books.

Agents of Atlas is just a fun old-time Marvel book, so far pretty self contained.

I'm forced anymore to be selective on my buying, both expense-wise as well as personal taste. At $4.00 a pop, I just gotta buy what I like.

            >I think after Dark Knight and Watchmen, the genre went too far into the adult-themed stories.

Y'know.... I feel kind of the opposite, since those books didn't strike me as being particularly grown up. Maybe a little more HONEST about depicting the sort of things that'd naturally happen if a superhero world were subject to the sorts of circumstance the real world is.... but they were still kinda "point-and-giggle" to me. They dwelled on the sex and violence.... all in a "plausible deniability" sort of way. I think the only REAL adult comic the big two and a half have put out was "Marvels." And that was 'cos it dealt with the sort of things a grownup would concern themselves with. AND it presented several good arguments on the whole superhero thing. (Rather than one heavily stated one. Like Dark Knight and Watchmen did.)

            >It IS meant for a Horror Story Meets the DC Universe

Well.... I think it's meant as "Marvel made a lot of money with undead superheroes so let's US do that!" But the Marvel Zombies book was a horror story, as is this one. Really; we've seen this before, since there's ALWAYS been an evil version/evil dimension/evil clone/evil doppleganger version of durned near every superhero. It's kind of surprising it took this long to make 'em zombies. (Although even the old Superfriends cartoon had the team turned into evil vampires....)

            >DARK Sells by the Boat Load.

Not really. Not since the early 90's. That's why the typical Marvel/DC/sometimes Image book sells about 75,000 copies a month; instead of the 250,000+ they used to. But the "dark" formula has been the dominant one for a while, and nothing else has really hit big; so they keep running with it. You're starting to see little cracks though. The protest againt kid-unfriendly books and the "comics was better back in the day" debates are heating up. DC's cartoons are generally kid-fiendly, and they've been putting out kid-specific comics for a while now. Even Marvel had them weird li'l Marvel figures.

It's all cyclic, and once the novelty of one style wears off they shift to another; and there are only SO MANY permutations you can make.

            >You can only take so much darkness before it gets boring.

            Yeah. Like that.

            >"Kids didn't abandon Comics...Comics abandon Kids".

*cough*SHONEN JUMP*coughcough* Comics didn't abandon kids, SUPERHEROES abandoned kids.

            >rest assured that it's NOTHING like Marvel Zombies. There IS a light at the end of the tunnel....

But.... there was in Marvel Zombies, too....

It's one of a long list of similar but not so much as to be ripoff comics that DC and Marvel have done over the years. The basic concept (undead superheroes fight living superheroes) and a lot of the sylistics are the same, but the books are different enough to not feel like copies.

Got the book yesterday. Interesting read. Apparently I missed the issue with the fight between Flash and GL with Martian Manhunter. Can someone tell me what issue that is? And man, is Aquaman ****ed or what?!?!

And why is Dove able to remain dead and buried. Is it because he's "at peace"?

I think the fight started in BN 1 and continued into the latest issue of GL.

I was wondering about Dove as well. Out of all the heroes that have died and now risen, he is the only one "at peace"? I did like the way the black rings were shielded from going further.
