Actually, that's what I consider BAD about the internets.... you never have to hear a dissenting opinion so folks coccoon really bad. You don't get any real exchange of ideas, just the same ones cycling around over and over. And people lose the ability to discuss dissenting opinions.

    Really?

I think BOTH extremes are happening on the Net simultaneously. Like the large number of specialty cable TV channels, there are "narrow-casting" opportunities for sub-groups (and sub-sub-groups within groups.. etc..), like a certain nostalgia-flavored toy board we all know and love. At the same time, go to many places on the Net and there is rampant "flaming", baiters, haters and "legends in their own minds" writing detailed multi page answers to obscure questions to each other, often quite heated and snarky (luckily an infrequent occurence here).

Not enough discussion of dissenting opinions? Hmm.... maybe we're both going to different boards! LOL

Just My opinion, of course ...

That's what I mean about people losing their ability to debate. I've noticed that a lot of discussions amount to one or two people actually exchanging info, a bunch of people adding the above-mentioned banter, and (oddest of all) vast numbers of people who find it all pointless and feel the need to post: AGAIN AND AGAIN, how little attention they're gonna give the whole thing.

          How true.

Go to many of the DC and Marvel toyboards and you'll see great wailing and gnashing of teeth over sloppy paint applications or shipping/distribution schedules. Some of those arguments make Mego discussions about waiting for custom or small-company orders to be produced, seem VERY tolerant by comparison.

I wonder if that has anything to do with the age range of the posters elsewhere or if our love of nostalgia here has mellowed us?

Oh, HELL no! But I think it's been bad for comics since the late 80's, and the establishing of the "educated fan" that I hate so much. The folks who are more concered with the production of their books than the books themselves. I thnk way too much of that has crept in; culminating with the "designer comics" of the 90's. And the fallout now, where the marketing plan seems to take precedent over the story. ("Super-Ultimate-Crisis of Darkest-Eternal-Day part six" anyone?)

Definitely not. One of the other sites I post at skews MUCH older than the average here, and holee smokes; you should see the vitriol that flares up! (You think people HERE kvetch on manga?)
