I love FF 4 (return of Sub mariner), 5 (Dr. Doom) and then 6 ( a team-up of Subby and Doom)

The Battle with Hulk in No. 24 and 25 and the meeting with Dr. Strange, the X-men and Dare Devil in the next few issues.

The Inhumans issues in the 40s followed right up by the Galactus Trilogy and This Man This Monster strong stuff.

Then the Dr. Doom story around 84-87. The ideas and character that Kirby and Lee churned out in their run was truly fantastic.

Then Byrne's run up through the trial of Galactus was top notch. No. 236, the anniversary issue is great as well as his first Galactus story.

Waid's run a few years back was very nice, too.

Really? When Byrne is on the ball his stuff has been GREAT...his Fantastic Four, She-Hulk, Superman are all high points (and of course his work on Ucannny X-Men with Chris Claremont). But he's also had quite a few career bumps, a lot of them due to editorial conflicts.
I get the feeling a lot of those "editorial conflicts" were of Byrne's own making. He has a bad track record of leaving books in mid storyline, see She Hulk, Hulk, West Coast Avengers, Superman, and probably more. I lost interest in him when he was on Wonder Woman. He seemed to get a bit cranky when Babe and Danger Unlimited didn't perform well at Dark Horse.

Byrne left She-Hulk because the editor was re-writting his stuff to bring it in line with the She-Hulk graphic novel (written by someone else). Byrne's She-Hulk was a comedy and constantly breaching the 4th wall. The graphic novel was done straight.

Byrne left Hulk because Jim Shooter didn't agree with the direction even though that's what was decided on when Byrne switched with Mantlo.

And supposedly he left Superman because he didn't agree that the licensed Superman wasn't the same version as the comic book. Go figure.

Agreed, that plus the Reed/Sue divorce era (issues 130's - 150). Some pretty raw emotional panels there, stepping away from the typical 'save the universe' stuff, loyalties, etc. The Submariner solution was a bit trite, but still it allowed Medusa to really strut her stuff and mix into the FF team in a pretty dynamic way, much better than the temporary Crystal addition. I didn't like Rich Buckler as much as John Buscema, but it was still excellent story-telling.

And all these supposed conflicts are related to us thru Mr. Byrne, right? He never has seemed to hear of the word compromise, especially with the guys signing his paycheck. Sure he's a creative guy and all, but when he's working in someone else's sandbox sometimes the guy calling the shosts won't agree with his vision. The Superman thing he was mad that his art wasn't being used for liscensing, instead DC was still using Swan, Adams and Lopez art.

I used to be a big fan of his work.....but his EGO was too much to take. I got sick of him getting angry and leaving books.

He only works well with the Big two Honestly everything else he done outside of DC and Marvel has been crap. Generations worked somewhat because he was writing Familiar characters.

When he's done his own thing it's been mostly Boring.

^^ I liked the next Men, Danger Unlimited left me a bit cold and I could not get into his Doom Patrol at all.
