The Birds of Prey was really a great example of developing a bunch of established "B" list DCU characters that weren't really being well utilized into such strong characters. Let's hope with the title cancelled that they can continue to be strong characters on their own and not fall back into supporting status after being headliners for a decade. Not many other creators from that period can lay claim to having made lasting contributions to the X-Men mythos like that.
But yeah, his Shoulder Pads really didn't look very functional at all. Especially if you needed to look behind you.Comment

^ Let me know when they hit the local cineplex then....As we all know "in the works" doesn't always necessarily come to pass.

We all dump on Liefeld (probably with good reason many times), but you do have to give him credit where credit is due. He did create a couple of solid characters in Cable and Deadpool, who are both currently solid "B" list characters that have been sustaining their own titles for over a dozen years now. Not to mention "X-Force" is still following in his idea of a pro-active Mutant Strike Force.

OOOhhh, I really don't ever Dump on Robby .
I'm Actually the Guy that will defend some of his stuff,.. & request his art images on my custom Boxes ..., granted it might Hinder Sales a bit if I offer them...
Naw,
I was a big, big X-Force Fan back in the Day. Love characters like Cable, Deadpool & Domino. Big Fan of WarPath too, ... I dunno if Rob's the one who put this character on the Map or not,.. the 1st time I did ever see him was in New Mutants ..
Like I said I read all that Crap,.. it was one of the only books I read from Mavel. Thats about the Time I really started to get involved in all things "X" too. I also used to read Liefeld's stuff on Hawk & Dove ..
I think Hawk & Doves stuff today is still pretty good.... for the most part.
X-Force art is hit & Mis sometimes,.. I still liked the story..
& pretty much anything after X-Force seems to be a bit Odd..., I mean when Captain America is Running around with Boobies,.. that should throw up a Red Flag of some sort...... The Original Knight ..., Often Imitated, However Never Duplicated. The 1st Knight in Customs.

But yeah, it's very accurate to say that Liefeld turning him into the bloated 'roid look and redubbing him "Warpath" certainly put the character on the map after his extended cameos in The New Mutants as a bit part player.
It certainly gave him enough profile for Ed Brubaker to choose him as the Wolverine-substitue to go into space for the recent Shi'ar arc... I'm guessing from there he made his way into the new X-Force.
I really enjoyed Liefeld's artwork best when he was an Art Adams clone. In fact I picked up Hawk and Dove in the mistaken belief that I was getting a new DC Art Adams comic, but ended up really liking it! The original Dove dying in Crisis was pretty much the best thing that happened to that character. Marv Wolfman did some interesting things with him prior to this spinoff in The New Teen Titans baxter book.
I also have to give Liefeld credit for getting Alan Moore on a book that is probably one of the best Superman runs in the past twenty years, Supreme. (and of course that directly led to ABC).
Not going to give him any cred whatsoever for Alan Moore's Badrock/Violator however.
If the man could only figure out how draw hands and feet to the satisfaction of most fans' standards. I'm sure half the complaints would end overnight if he at least did that.Comment

Jim Lee's contributions on the other hand were totally solid at least in the beginning. Kind of like a prototype "Ultimate" line. Loved the whole Hulk/Iron Man connection they laid down. As well as the Tony Stark/Reed Richards/Bruce Banner/Hank Pym brain-trust. The only thing that didn't jibe with me was Rebel. IIRC, their Hulk didn't wear pants either, just like the Ultimate Hulk.Comment

Liefeld had his moments. He did swipe A LOT though, with no credit given to the original artist. That gripes me pretty bad. It's a pet peeve. He's steal whole panel layouts from books. Case in point, the double page spread in X-Force #1 is EXACTLY the same composition as Perez's New Teen Titans #39.
Remember the naked redraw of Liefeld's Cap that circulated around the net for a decade?
I did like his Hawk and Dove mini. He did draw hands and feet in that one. Maybe Karl Kesel drew them in, in the inking phase.

What always bothered me about Liefield was all the books that he would solicit and then nothing would come out. I remember hearing store owners gripe about that.
The only book I ever liked of his was Prophet when Stephen Platt came on to do the artwork and when Alan Moore did Supreme.........other than that I never liked his work. especially his Image work. His Captain America was an Abomination!Comment
