    Dc comics folding up?

Rumors flying up all over the comicboards about DC comics "
folding up" after the Crisis books.

The rumors also predict the DC universe possibly might "return" in a new form or as many call it, a new reboot.

Lots of big guns are gone...Martian Manhunter, Aquaman...etc.

Top Batman books are being cancelled with no plans of returning such as Robin and Nightwing. It wasn't bad sales either. Those books were selling pretty well.

Thoughts? Anybody? I have predicted this "Reboot" thing awhile ago but it looks like that the rumors on comicboards are getting stronger.

It does say that in Final Crisis, evil is going to win and the world is going to be destroyed.

Reboot? Or maybe just a big fold?

Robin and Night wing were cancelled due to the RIP storyline and the fact that Dick will be under the cowl and the Robin title is being restarted as Batman and Robin. Jonn can't really be considered a big gun. Sure he's an original Leaguer, but can't carry a book.

It wouldn't hurt my feelings at this point to see them hit the cosmic reset button. Honestly, if they just went back to Earth 1 right before Crisis, most of the characters would be in a pretty good place for writers and artists to spring forward from. The last truely classic version of each character existed then, minus a few good later ones like Tim Drake.

Well I will tell you this much there is a huge Green Lantern story arch they are currently building that should take them into the summer of 2009 So I do not see the company "folding up" any time soon, after ever crisis some sort of reset happens that is the reason they have crisis books. But do not look for DC to close down any time soon. It will be going strong for the foreseeable future.

I can't imagine the company shutting down and as for rebooting the entire universe? Who cares.

Final Crisis turned me off DC, I know some people who think it's fantastic but I can't stomach what they've done.

I can't stomach what they'd done, and they can't keep up with what they've done.

Final Crisis is garbage, plain and simple....before Morrrison's re-writes or after, it doesn't make a difference because it ALL sucks IMO. To me, compared to Marvel, the DC Universe was always the cleaner, happier place of the two...where the line between good and evil was very clear and distinct. A lot of that has changed in the past 5 years or so, starting with "identity Crisis".
This is NOT the DC Universe I grew up on and love.

Dan DiDio needs to be given the boot...bring back Jennette Khan! And where does Paul Levitz stand in all of this? Is he just closing his eyes and lettin' it ride?

From what I understand, Levitz has the philosophy of not micro-managing people. In this case, he should. Heck bring back Mike Carlin! Get Dick Giordano to un-retire!

I have been reading DC Comics ever since I was little and my Mom would buy those 100 page super-spectaculars (well even before that too) and I have NEVER come as close as I am now from dropping 98% of the books I buy now. I will probably never stop collecting Superman & Action but all the rest are questionable.
                  Kinda sad.
Like the one poster said, these ain't the DC characters I grew up with and they just keep getting worse every time they try to reboot things.
Final Crisis is not only boring but it's all over the place and these never-ending tie-ins and 'special events' and the like are getting on my nerves.
I guess we'll see what happens but I'm not planning on buying the new big Green Lantern saga so maybe I'll be on the outside looking in by then and just concentrate on filling in my back issues?

Yeah, I don't see DC Comics folding. Although, I do see them as pretty much the same as the big three in Detroit. Working with an outdated business model. Different day, but still shoveling the same ----.

My guess is that aside from anything else (New Krypton, Battle for the Cowl, etc.) Geoff Johns and Green Lantern: Blackest Night is the big event for 2009.

Of course, they could be adversely affected by the economy just like everything else...

It's funny this thread just came up...as I was planning on cancelling ALL My DC Books, except Green Lantern...at My next trip to the Comic Shop.

It's a sad time for Fans of the DC Universe.

The one bright constant in the DC Universe IMO is Geoff Johns...I can't sing his praises enough...Action Comics, Legion, Green Lantern, The Flash...this is the go-to guy that fixes things other poeple f'up without a doubt. He should have been handed the reigns for Final Crisis instead of Morrison. True, his Infinite Crisis ended more with a whimper instead of a bang, but I blame that on DiDio and his plans for the new multiverse (which is just rehash of previous Elseworlds stories....). Still, for all it's faults, Infinite Crisis was a much better read and had tons more story packed in it than Final Crisis does.

Gail Simone is another bright star. I'd like to see her do more also. But other than that, I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head that excites my with their writing and the direction of their books. If there is I apologize for overlooking them but obviously they aren't doing enough to stick in my mind.

I think the writing and editiorial on DC books has been sub-par for quite a while. The obvious continuity disaster that is Countdown to Final Crisis/Death of the New Gods/Final Crisis is just one example. Choosing an artist (Tony Daniels) to write the next "great" (ahem) Batman arc (Battle for the Cowl) is another. I could go on and mention the poor treatment of Hawkman, Aquaman, J'onn J'onzz, The Teen Titans and others but I won't.

Yeah,.. it's all kinda like Whatever to Me..
I never read a Batman book for over 4 Yrs,.. until Hush,.. I can do it again.

There is definately some serious hit & miss's with DC Lately,.. However I don't think it's all negative. Green Lantern, Rise of the Red Lanterns,.. & that Whole damn lead up to Blackest Night will be very cool,.. I am enjoying what I am reading now,.. & know the best has yet to come,.. Johnn's is a Master.

                            Hmmmm....

A full continuity reboot? You mean, again? They've been doing it every few months since the 90's. Hell; they've been doing it for a LOT longer, if you consider "Crisis on Two Earths" (or whatever the exact title was) a reboot....

It can't be easy working for the big two and a half any more. You've got to please the old fans, you've got to get NEW fans, and you've got to deal with all sorts of changes and trends you probably don't understand. ("I dunno why the kids read THIS.... it's all big eyes and speed lines.... Quick, add more speed lines!!!") You're constantly barraged by the internet, letters, and a zillion commentators all whining about stuff and asking for stuff.... How do you decide WHO to listen to?

On top of that you're working with writers who'd rather be doing movies, artists who want to completely redesign the characters, fans who've seen every permutation of Batman possible....

I think what they need to do is:

-let go of the hype! Quit with the non-events we all know aren't going anywhere, stop with the reboots and the quick fixes and just write some damned stories! It's okay if this month's book doesn't lead into or tie in with anything else! *sheesh!*

-and having done that, QUIT LISTENING TO PEOPLE!!! You're not gonna please everyone. Hell, these days you're probably not gonna please ANY of the really vocal critics. People don't often write huge blogs about stuff they LIKE! If someone on "alt.nerd.obsessive" didn't care for the way Batman's cape looked; LET IT GO! Once you choose a course, stick with it! Rearranging stuff every few months confuses the readers! They need an "in" and they need it to NOT be pulled out from under them three issues later! You CAN'T build up a readership by rearranging things all the time!

-and if you REALLY feel the need to change things, let it happen organicly! SHOW us what's going on, don't just call a Mulligan and say "okay, so now THIS guy is Batman." Show us the process, let us see it happening, make it part of the story. Which means it'll have to conform in some way to your established continuity. Which can be tricky to do. But that's too bad, suck it up. Nobody said comics was easy!

OR you can just, you know... add bigger boobs, swearing and more blood.

                            Whatever.

                            Don C.

I would LOVE to read "Batman" for example on a monthly basis with no real continuity from issue to issue, just maybe one or two part stories, emphasizing the detective skills of the Dark Knight, some featuring classic foes and others just average criminal-types. For a solid year straight!

I don't think they could do it though....they don't have it in them anymore to tell stories that are "non-events'.
