In the midst of the holofoil craze at marvel, I quit the XBooks cold turkey after reading them since the All New era in the 70's. I quickly fell in with a lot of the Dark Horse stuff like Next Men, Hardboiled, Hellboy, Sin City. When most of that stuff went away, I just stuck with HB and eventually drifted into DC.

You must try to generate happiness within yourself. If you aren't happy in one place, chances are you won't be happy anyplace. -Ernie Banks -
I liked Fantastic Four, Teen Titans, Firestorm, Spider-Man, Star Wars, Micronauts, Thor and but discovered unusual titles like Swamp Thing, Ambush Bug, Omega Men, and perhaps DC's first Vertigo comic, Thriller, long before they nailed down the Vertigo branding. Thriller has long been forgotten but I think they need to pick up where they left off.
I remember when Independent Comics started coming out en masse in the early 80's. It changed what I liked. I discovered Rocketeer, American Flagg, Jon Sable, Mars, Nexus and E-Man. I was skeptical about Hellboy when it came out but I really liked it once I read it. It brought back the Independent feel of the 80's. Then I discovered Jack Staff & The Walking Dead.Comment

It might be me, but I've grown tired of the way modern comics are presented. The plots seem "too complicated", the panels too overcrowded. I started reading comics in the early 70s, and I prefer those simpler times. When men didn't all look like body builders, and women didn't all have F-cups.
Not that I don't like women with F-cups, mind you, but that's something different.
I also hate the fact that every hero dies, and is resurrected two years later, when the novelty of killing him off has expired, and they want to boost sales again.
How's Captain A, btw?
I also hate the fact that they reboot series, starting back from issue 1 again, losing all feeling of "history" and continuity.
Apart from that, I truly love modern comics.....
Up until the past few years, I was a Marvel Zombie (hardcore Spider-Man fan until Joe Quesada started setting things up for One More Day - saw where that was going from a mile away, so I decided to bolt. Nice to know lots of fans agreed with me.), with the minority being DC. Several events pretty much had me give up the hobby to an extent:
1) Event crossovers that seldom ended satisfactorally, and served as little more than lead-ups to yet another crossover event, which leads to another, etc. (I bolted just prior to Marvel's Civil War).
2) Writing. Is there such a thing as coherent storytelling anymore?
3) Artwork. Bad artwork KILLS a decent story. Can't tell you how many times I've blown off a story just because the art looks like garbage.
4) Deaths and replacement characters. I like Capt. America. I want to read about Capt. America. I don't want to read about Bucky in a Capt. America suit. Oh and Steve Rogers/Cap's dead until his movie comes out.
5) Retcons/reboots - DC's done this how many times? In the past 20 years or so? The occasional reboot I can see (Marvel DEFINITELY needs a spring cleaning), but c'mon already.
So, with the exception of Ultimate Spider-Man, I'm done with monthlies. So, with my freed-up fundage, i rediscovered Conan thanks to Dark Horse (the classic Roy Thomas/John Buscema stuff), as well as Creepy. I may even dabble in some Vampirella classics, too (I think Harris publishes them), as I missed out on those the first time around."It's sad that governments are chiefed by the double tongues. I stopped reading comics for about 10 years. It happened when John Bryne took over Wonder Woman. I hated the way he drew her. I couldn't stop thinking I was reading She-Hulk wearing Wonder Woman's costume. I've been told by WW fans some of his stories are great and have almost gone back to buy some cheap back issues just to check that out but have not been able to get over She-Hulk WW!
I did start buying comics again when Greg Rucka was doing Wonder Woman. I loved his Medusa Story line but of course once I was enjoying comics again DC ruins it for me by re-booting the comic once more.
I have been buying the new WW series but can't stand the fact they had to start it back at #1 I know that helps sales and is why it's done but still hate it.
I have been buying only recently the Teen Titans and Supergirl since her new start in 34 and a few ramdom comics here and there.
I used to like reading Chaos Comics but got bored with them when they did the monthly thing way back in the 90s.Comment

I quite Spiderman, after 35 years (!), when they decided to make Peter and MJs marriage disappear. If that's all they can invent to continue a series, why not end it in style and be done with it.....

Don't get me started. I had a LONG response to this, but I deleted it to stay on topic. I do agree though, that was one of the lousiest ideas to come out of, well, the House of Ideas, in many a moon. I hold out hope that one day, years from now, the marriage will be restored (been a fan for 36 years, the marriage was a highpoint for me).
Back on topic: My wife and I hit the local comics shop today, and I'm going to try out some early Vampirella books when I get the funds together. The Warren artwork was only magnificent back in the day, and the narrative easy to follow. Plus, my love of all things monster is starting to roar back with a vengeance, especially now that Forry Ackerman is rumored to be at Prince Sirki's door."It's sad that governments are chiefed by the double tongues. I'm actually experiencing a change right now. I've always been a big superhero fan (especially DC) but I just don't like the direction/tone that either of the Big Two have right now, so I find myself reading more and more indie titles.Comment

Always have been a Hulk fan, always will be a Hulk fan, through good and bad, I have read the title.
I have however rediscovered old Avengers, Captain America, and my guitarist has let me borrow his Iron Man run. I wouldn't even read those as a kid, plus I did like Claremont's take on the X-Men but when he left, I tuned out.
I do have some new faves though, I love the Sentry and KICK *** Great stuff there.
So no, to answer your question, my taste hasn't changed much. That's the appeal for me.sigpic

^^^ Didn't really care for the Sentry's modern appearances, but am really digging the Age of the Sentry retro comic a bunch. You must try to generate happiness within yourself. If you aren't happy in one place, chances are you won't be happy anyplace. -Ernie BanksComment

^^^ I do, I like the way Jenkins created him. Plus, the Hulk was his sidekick, and I liked the thought of that, also, his agorophobia makes him a great character with alot of issues. He just dosen't fly in and save the day until after he's had a battle with himself. When he does that, hold your horses. He waits till the last second and just does something absolutely incredible. All that appeals to me in the little kid sense. That's what makes me like him more than most. I do agree Age of the Sentry is one heckuva book!sigpic

Yeah in the HULK/SENTRY comic that came out in the early 2000's The Sentry showed up in the Hulk's stories in issue #7 (see? makes total sense since there wasn't an issue #7 of the Incredible Hulk.)Then later, he reunited with him in the JR JR/Jenkins Sentry limited series. Great stuff man, great stuff. I highly reccomend that one if you haven't read it.sigpic

I guess I'm pretty much open to reading a wide variety of stuff. I used to pick up a lot of different stuff back in the day. I had friends that liked Jonah Hex, House of Mystery and stuff. I pretty much stick with straight ahead super-hero stuff; but I will read other genres. With the price of comics these days, I just carve out a little niche and stick with it...Shameless self-promotion -
