Maybe; but a lot of that tone had it's origins with the Burton Batman. Or at least the mania for it.
I disagree, Burton's Batman is just that, it's his version of the character. Some of the roots were in the comic themselves but he pretty much reimagined the character to his liking.

It was an excellent piece of fantasy and a great comic movie, so it's not surprising that the public liked it. Regardless of what it is, it isn't the quintessential Batman movie either. It's more accurate than the West version but anything played straight would be.

Burton's Batman is short, freely uses machine guns, bombs and isn't against setting people on fire. He tries to gun down the Joker from his plane, that's not something Batman has done in his history.

The Bale Batman is far closer to the classic character. I think that's why fans embraced it over Burtons, not because we're all sheep excited by it's "new and shiny" nature.

First movie was okay, was never a fan of anything after that. Second movie is what really turned me off. Catwoman with nine lives? An army of penguins with missile launchers? Just slap a remote on the Batmobile and you can control it? ugh. To me that was the beginning of the end for those movies.

I still like the Burton films, (1 & 2). The newer films are just more mature and a bit more grounded in reality. I think Burton Films are like Marshall Rogers Batman comapred to todays films which are like Neal Adams Baman.

Maybe not against the Joker but Batman has used firearms very early in his career. The most infamous examples are firing silver bullets at vampires asleep in the coffins and using a machine gun mounted on his airplane to kill some of Hugo Strange's "monster men". Granted these were probably isolated circumstances, brought on by the supernatural elements of his foes.

But, like the early Superman, Batman wasn't against tossing a thug off a rooftop every now and again early in his career...

I loved Batman Returns. It's still my favorite Batman film. Begins is good and the Dark Knight is good too but I love Catwoman in the returns movie it just makes up for anything that isn't right. I do like Devito as Penguin though. The 89 Batman isn't bad but not a fav of mine. The later films are really bad and I was so looking forward to Batgirl but instead I ended up hating it. Ivy was the only thing I liked in the later movies.

My Favorite version of Batman has always been Batman 1939 year one. I like the early rendition of Batman that Kane and Finger did. I like the gun toting vigilante from that time. I can understand why today he doesn't need a gun........but in 1939 a Gun for that time makes a lot of sense. Batman didn't have state of the art tech. He had a batarang,Gun and an unmarked car. I always thought that made for more creative writing.

I totally loved the 2 Burton Batman films. Great stuff! The Nolan movies are awesome as well but as Palitoy stated, the real aspect of it kinda turns me off too. I mean these movies are based off off a comic book for Grud's sake! If you make it too real then why watch a movie, go out and be Batman yourself if you got the loot to do it. However, I get into arguments about "The Dark Knight" being the greatest comic book movie ever.
I totally disagree, it's one helluva Hollywood blockbuster based off of comic book characters.

IMHO Sin City is the best because you can read the Gorramned comic while watching the movie. The changes were made by the creator of the comic and were tastefull and better for the movie. Plus Miller is my favorite writer.

In fact, I think Miller should take a crack at a Batman film. Dark Knight Returns anyone?

Starring an older Keaton and you already got my money!
Or even better: Adam West! He can do non-campy acting, can't he?

Werd, I think an older Keaton would rock the part in the best way!

I've always said The Governator should finish the "Conan Trilogy" as well.

Sly proved that older action heroes still have it after the snuff fest that was Rambo 4!

                      So BRING IT ON!

Man a DK Returns with Miller directing would be interesting, but the heck with Keaton, bring on Kurt Russel. I always thought of Clint Eastwood in the old Gordon role.

I'd rather see Eastwood do Jonah Hex!!
Still not too old cuz most of his face would be makeup/appliances anyway. They could CGI his face in the younger scenes or just get another actor for that part.

I don't want Miller going anywhere NEAR Batman again. Even if he did a film of DKR, he'd make Batman a total raving psycho, rather than hinting at his psychosis like the original comics did. Miller has lost his ability to be subtle.

As much as I love Clint Eastwood, I don't think you could ever buy him in the costume. He's too famous, and his on screen character is too imprinted in our culture. He'd come off as Clint trick-or-treating as Batman. That being said, when I read DKR, I thought of Batman as a Clint-type character.

I don't particularly want to see a DKR film right now. I'd much rather see Nolan and Bale return and wrap this series up.

Unless I skipped over it, I didn't see anyone say they wanted Eastwood as Batman. thunderbolt said he wanted Eastwood as Commisioner Gordon.
