My Son: Comic Art Detective in Training

Many of you know that one of my hobbies is trying to identify who drew what when it comes to comic art used in licensing. This stems from my days of youth, where, even before I could read, I would try and identify artists work to previous work I had seen.

Last night, after we watched Green Arrow's origin on Smallville, I read Andrew "Green Arrow's First Case" which first detailed Ollie's origin about being castaway on a desert island. The art was by Jack Kirby no less, during his brief run on the GA strip.

I was reading the story to Andrew, with him looking over my shoulder at the pages, when he mentioned "Green Arrow looks like the old Captain America".

My heart swelled with pride as I told him that's because both were drawn by Jack Kirby! And that Kirby had co-created Captain America, as well as most other major Marvel characters, and Darkseid and all related characters at DC. He recognized Kirby's art from the old "Tales of Suspense" tales I read him from the Essential Captain America volumes, and videotapes I have of the old 60s Marvel toons!

I think he could come home with a note that he's been bumped to the 5th grade and I wouldn't be as proud!!!

I know the feeling . . . when I was watching "Fantastic Four" with my kids, in the scene when Willie Lumpkin pops in, my seven-year-old daughter looked up suddenly and asked, "Is that Stan Lee?"

I'd be willing to bet none of the girls (and dang few of the boys, if any) in the entire first grade at her school would have known Stan the Man on sight like that.

      Proud, indeed . . .

Hey Chris That's awesome!! I had a moment this morning I took my two year old daughter to the doctor's for a check up afterwards we went to Game stop. While we looked through the game racks she saw the Hulk and Exclaimed rather loudly "HULK SMASH!!" Everyone in the shop roared laughing hearing my little one say that!!! I was never so proud!!!

My daughters were a little disgusted with themselves that they actually knew all of the villains in the Lego Batman Wii game...even Killer Moth. I, on the other hand, was very proud...
