My DC Direct 13" JUSTICE SOCIETY Customs

After completing my Invaders and Liberty Legion 13" DC Direct-style customs, I turned my attention to filling out my JSA roster (DCD produced excellent 13" versions of the Golden Age Flash & Green Lantern before putting the line on hiatus). I apologize in advance for the format; I know this is a Mego forum, and that the majority of the customs showcased here are 8"-scale, but as there aren't any DCD 13" forums that I know of, I hope everyone will indulge me.

Previously, I had completed customs of The Spectre and Dr Fate; here are pics of those, in case you missed them:

Next, I went to work on the Earth-2 Robin. Since my first exposure to the JSA came in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #91, it became my goal to complete them as they appeared in that issue, so I first worked on the Batman-influenced costume Robin wore:

Not satisfied with just one Robin, I then decided to customize him in the costume he wore in ALL-STAR COMICS #58-up:

After Robin, I focused on Starman. (Like several of my JSA customs, I used a DCD Captain Marvel/Shazam as the base, so many of the faces will show similarities):

Dr Mid-Nite was next (still looking for an in-scale Owl to accessorize him with: any suggestions?):

One of DCD's biggest gaps in the 13" line was Hawkman; it is my goal to customize both the Earth-1 and Earth-2 versions, up first is the E2 Carter Hall:

Hourman was a bit of a challenge; I wasn't sure how I'd do the cowl. In the comics, the part covering his upper face is shown in shadow, so I used black under a yellow hood (and yes, that;s another Shazam figure as the base!):

Most recently, I completed the Golden Age Sandman. A bit of a challenge rounding up the necessary parts. I purchased a 1/6-scale gas mask from a military line and modded it, used a Larry Talbot/Wolfman hat from the 12" Sideshow figure, a shirt from the Clark Kent suit that came with DCD's first Superman figure, Clark's shoes (painted brown), and a tie from Dr Manhattan. The suit gave me fits; I tried unsuccessfully to de-colorize and dye both a Dr Manhattan and Clark Kent suit, but neither would take the dye.
So I finally just bit the bullet and made my own suit, using a Dr Manhattan suit that I took apart for a pattern. The results were less than perfect, but I'm more or less satisfied:

Finally, here's a group shot of my customized JSA figures completed to date (with the two Robins book-ending the lineup):

I've started Wildcat, but my efforts to construct his mask have thus far been unsatisfactory. I plan to do the Huntress soon, as well as Mr. Terrific. If I can figure out how to modify one of the DCD bodies to shorten it, I'll do the Atom. Johnny Thunder is a long shot, as is Ma Hunkle (the original Red Tornado!). I'll eventually make Golden Age versions of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman as well. Thanks for looking, and for indulging my non-Mego scale customs!

I Love your Customs! I Love the JSA and i've made most of these in 8" Mego size myself thanks to brian leitner's suits. These might be larger size but don't forget Mego made a 12" line of figures. Keep them coming!

I kept hoping that there'd be a Sandman in this scale, but I was hoping for his first appearance mask or the Sandman Mystery Theater version They look great as a group, but I think my favorite is Dr Midnite. He just looks fabulous.

Are there any fat or even stockier bodies in this scale?

My heart is obviously in Mego scale, but those are superb. I can appreciate all scales of talent, and you have quite a bit. That's an expensive customizing hobby you got there having to buy the DC Direct bodies for your base. Outstading work and I look forward to seeing more.

BTW, for Atom just grab a 9-incher and roll with that. He'll look in-scale with the others.

I am a big time Earth 2 fan. I can say that these are excellent in every form of the word! While I can't really select a favorite, I can tell you that both Robin's bring a tear to my eye. Both books you mentioned are dear to me as well. They were treasured comics of my childhood. I recall that being because of the unique Robin costumes.

Thanks for posting these. Love them!!

No, they do make a smaller, teen-scale body that was used for Robin (too expensive on the secondary market to use in bulk!). Many of the movie-based DCD 1/6 figures used the smaller teen body; the Spirit can be had relatively cheap. for example.
There's also a skinny, taller body that is modified from the teen body that was used for the Joker and Sinestro (I used a Sinestro body to do Marvel's Thin Man, and plan to use one for Uncle Sam eventually).

Oh yeah; I was lucky to pick up many for clearance prices (especially Shazam, Nightwing and Aquaman), but they usually average around $45-50 each. Some, like Batman (both but especially the classic), Robin, Green Arrow and Superman are quite a bit more.

I thought about that (using the smaller movie-based Spirit figure as a base), but the arms and legs and build are too slender IMO. The Atom, while short, has a muscular build. I want him to look as buff as the other figures, just shorter.

Thanks, that means a lot! I too have very fond memories of those two issues. That JLA #91 was passed down to me by my older brother (who sadly passed away a few years back), and is the issue that turned me on to the JSA. I was fascinated by the Earth-2 concept as a 7-year-old, and its alternate versions of familiar DC heroes, especially the older Robin.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments!

Collecting comics was what my father and I did together when growing up. I love that he buys his comics from me now (I have a comic store). I remember him explaining the multiple earths concept to me and how I marveled at the concept. Although i loved the Crisis story from Wolfman/Perez initially, I was saddened when I realized I would never get to have that conversation with my own son. Thank God for Geoff Johns and him giving me back that opportunity. I got to have that conversation with my son and many of my customers as well. I digress, simply to again say that those are some magnificent customs. Your group shot now graces my desktop! Thank you!

Warlock664, that is top notch work! Congratulations. You are by all means an artist. I am a DC Direct 1:6 scale line fan and regret that they stopped releasing classics heroes... Are you by any chances in connection to s_bennet from the DC Direct forum? Keep up the good work!
