Let me tell you about a fella named Karlo....

The "Great" film star Basil Carlo never really did much of mention in acting circles, mostly playing one off, and background characters in plays and old movies. His only real claim to fame was his appearance in a little film called " Dread Castle", where he played a nefarious character called the "Terror". Basil enjoyed his brief fling with fame...maybe a little too much, as he ruined his burgeoning career with one scandal after another.
Hearing of a remake, Basil went a little loopy, and began murdering the stars of the new film. This earned him two things, the name Clayface, and a meeting with the Dynamic Duo of Batman and Robin who brought the maniac to justice (more than once actually)!

Bartholomew Jehoshaphat Karlo is the Grandson and heir of the late Basil. Bart never was one for work, study, or the pursuit of excellence. Nope, instead he happily lived a life of leisure, living off of the residuals from the seemingly unending books and movies about Basil, that his status as a nemesis of Batman brought him. Then...as usually happens, people began to forget about Clayface "1" (as he was now referred to), as other villians "usurped" the name. It didnt help that they had flashy powers and cool costumes, unlike Basil's silly old mask. The money pit started to empty...and Bart did have one expensive hobby...Gambling! Rather quickly, Bart found he owed a lot of money to a certain Gotham crime boss known as Sterling Silversmith! Bart had to do something, and fast!

Bart decided to don his Grandpa's old costume, and make a couple of semi-public appearances. Brandish a knife, laugh like a maniac, and then run back into the darkness...surely that would kick start the Basil Karlo publicity machine? ...Then Bart remembered something. He had sold the "Clayface" mask to a local comic shop guy to pay down previous gambling debts. No problem....Break into the comic shop, steal back the mask...and Bingo!! Clayface gets back in the press, and Bart makes some moola. Unfortunately things didnt go well for Bart. The comic shop owner caught him red handed stealing the mask. In the scuffle Bart accidentally killed the shop owner, and ran off into the shadows.

Bart's little plan sort of worked. By the next day the name Clayface was on everyones lips. Turns out so was Bart's, as a security camera had recorded everything. Bart/Clayface was now a wanted man.....and Bart knew full well Batman would be after him. Bart decided only Silversmith could protect him. Bart owed him a rather large sum of money, and if Sterling wanted to see any of it, he would have to keep Bart alive.....wouldnt he?

(Sorry folks, pics arent the best. Kind of a quickie project tonight. I've been working on Clayface for a bit (including a better mask), but Sterling was a quick snap together of parts from the bin.)

Its not a head I'm afraid...It really is a mask, actually a photoshopped Hulk halloween mask printed on foam. I've been trying to make a sculpted mask, but so far this one looks the most like the comic images (such as they are...most of the classic Clayface appearance art work is done in shadows, and very hard to make out.)

I'm working on Sterlings cane gun too, but havent decided what to make it out of. The prototype was made from a paint brush handle painted with chrome paint, but looked really crummy. I've got some stainless tubing in 1/8" around my shop somewhere, and am planning on making a new cane using that.

                      Clayface: the next chapter:

Bart attempts to elicit Sterling Silversmiths protection from the police (and Batman), but Sterling has other plans. His henchman knock Bart out and drive him out to the old Gotham Cemetary. While seemingly unconscious, Bart overhears the two thugs discuss the details of a shipment of money coming in by train from one of Silversmith's Metropolis "enterprises".
Arriving at the cemetary, the two goons toss Clayface in an open grave, and start to bury him alive. Bart quickly reasons that if he wants to escape and live he can no longer depend on others, as he has his entire life. He quickly jumps up, surprising his "undertakers" and kills one with a toss of his knife, and while struggling with the other, manages to take him out with a shovel. Clayface then takes the goons car and heads for the nearby train tracks, where he manages to jump aboard the Metropolis Flyer...the train with Silversmiths money! He finds the passenger car and quickly locates and kills the courier (no doubt shocking the other passengers), takes the satchel of money and heads out between the rail cars where he encounters no one other than Batman!
A struggle ensues, and Clayface manges to get away, and climbs to the top of the car. Batman follows, but Bart is turning out to be suited for the life of a supervillian, and manages to push Bats over the edge of the car as the train is on the trestle crossing the deep Gotham Gorge. Batman finds a handhold, and begins to climb up. Clayface turns to run, but discovers Robin standing behind him. Left with no alternative...Clayface jumps to what must be certain death!!
Commissioner Gordon is called in, and the Gotham Police search the river below, but no sign of Clayface can be found.

...Of course, Clayface survives and uses his new found money not to resume his old lifestyle, but to start a new one. Bart Karlo died when he was in that grave. Now there is only Clayface. A diabolical criminal who has only two things on his mind. 1) Kill Batman, and 2) Kill Silversmith...after he has usurped his throne as Gothams Crime Boss!
Seeking fellow criminals like himself, who have nothing to lose and face the death penalty if they are ever captured, Clayface starts his own "Last Chance" gang, and begins an all out assault on Silversmiths empire!
Of course, as is the norm in comics, this leads to a final showdown between Clayface and Silversmith...with Batman and Robin smack dab in the middle!!!
