New printer

so let me ask-- do these printers need some nice air ventilation or can they be used in any room lets say in your house? Was also curious if anyone actually tried to re-create an LP record and see if it plays fine

^^the MakerBot replicator 2 uses biodegradable PLA material. It doesn't burn as it prints or it would evaporate, but if you put your nose directly above the extruder, you can get a whiff. Nothing that is gonna get you high, and something ya prolly ought not to do...but to answer your question, I do not believe running a dryer vent air ventilation system is needed. I have seen a guy who did, but I think it's paranoia.
The ability to print something as fine as an LP record might be out there on those printers that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, but obtaining a source to actually send the printer might be more difficult. Not sure how one would get a digital file of something as fine as a record. We have the scanner, which prolly could, but you'd need a pretty dust free environment and a really clean record to scan..

Thanks for the info. I was seeing some demos (mostly youtube) and at work the thought of a 7 or 12" record crossed my mind. No real reason for it, but the curiosity of "would it work" was getting to me

you inspired me to build a 3D file of a particular body mod...

Started with a new Drmego body, cutting in half just under the belly button (not an easy task).
Took a mego body out of the spare parts bin, cut off the torso ball joint...
started sanding, gluing, squishing in bake-able clay..
cracking the hulk pelvis open to make it a tad wider for the modded normal pelvis...
more clay...more sanding...primed...
took each piece to the 3D scanner...couple hours later and i was printing swivel torsos and they are getting their maiden run on one of my mego meet figures.

See, this is my vision for this place someday...a digital library of generic body parts, heads, accessories.
It's no different than the backer card section where a user can download the artwork and print it out on their own inkjet printer.

^^yessir...time is getting nearer for a library of 3D files here.
With all of ours, Paul and Mike's innovation win this new area, it is only gonna grow.

Folks will begin to get educated on 3D printers, and how they are all not created equal.
Paul's is one way, mikes another, and ours is another..all with benefits, some of which I still want to learn about.

The objet printer mike has access to is the beast...prolly best, but way expensive for home use.
Paul's can get to 50 microns, whereas mine only gets to 100. But, build plates sizes, print times...it all begins to enter into the equation of what suits the end user best.

The level if customizing for this board is on the cusp of explosion.
Lets prepare...tell Joe we need some storage space for file hosting of the digital .STL files and get Scott working on a new forum!! ;-)

When I see it as smooth as a hand cast head from one of the top casters around here is when it will explode. Everything I've seen to date looks a bit on the rough side and will take sanding to get that smooth.

It's already there, just not my machine.
Folks at mego meet will see first hand the highest quality I get.
It's not resin smooth, but comparing the two is like apples and oranges.

Mikeoz's buck Rogers stuff was resin smooth..

we were actually gonna buy a B9 at work to compare to makerbot…but we played hell getting the guy to email us back…it was twice as expensive…materials just weren't quite ready yet….so we passed - investing in Makerbot from here-on-out.
In a couple years, we'll revisit.
FormLabs were the same way - but worse…email communication to Sales was painful to get a reply, and those jokers didn't even have supplies available because they didn't know what to price it at….so all you got was the one jug with your printer…ummm, problem? lol
I haven't went back and looked at either printer since, maybe there have been improvements since.

Wanna be blown away? a print RIGHT FROM THE PRINTER of a head I made for a client doing a 3 3/4 figure. The head is 2/3 of an inch high and has had no cleanup other than support removal. (This isnt a consumer grade printer, but still...)
