Another great batch, looking forward to seeing them done.
And how fitting to see Rorshach in there, I just watched Watchmen last night

Here's today's batch. These ones will need quite a bit of additional work.

Even though they have made a 8" Mego style Lex Luthor now, I'm still happy to have the original 12" Megos down to 8" size with these fellas.

I have another set of heads for these guys that I would like to try and put into more Movie-accurate costumes. Including a wig for the Hackman head if I can find one (just my twisted sense of humour).Leave a comment:

I bought about twenty heads each from both Russ and Austin (reproheads?) a few years ago, but if I were to hazard a guess based on the cylindrical neck plug, I'd say it's from Austin. It appears to be an upsized Super Powers Hawkman. Knowing that, it made painting it that much easier since I just followed the simple Super Powers colour scheme for both Hawkman and Firestorm. Looking at how these guys are computer coloured these days with dozens of gradients, I'm not sure I would have been up to the task, and they would have looked much less Mego-ey.
Austin also gave me some great tips at the Meet about keeping all the parts for each figure in it's own separate freezer bag. It seems a good way to keep track of what parts you need for each figure as well, particularly when it's time to place and order with one of the suppliers.Last edited by samurainoir; Jun 30, '10, 4:47 PM.Leave a comment:

I'm working with Mego73 to design a card as we speak.I agree. I think I'll start a thread on having a customizing fair and see if I can organize some kind of a regional get together to assemble figures.I just wish you guys were sitting around the table with me. Customizing is a solitary activity other than showing you guys on the board.Leave a comment:

Don't feel bad, painting the eyes is one of the hardest things to do, I still struggle with it myself
Love that assembly line picLeave a comment:

Looking forward to seeing you start on those Planetary customs!

Thanks for your kind words everyone. I realize I'm still a huge novice at this and was a bit nervous about showing my work in progress given how many great custom creations are displayed every day on this board.
Here are tonight's heads I worked on.

I picked up some great pointers at the meet. Whomever suggested working in an assembly line process doing multiple heads at once depending on colour and brush required really streamlined the process for me compared to when I first started on some of these projects a few years ago. It's much easier than just doing one head at a time and constantly cleaning brushes and waiting for paint on a single head to dry before proceeding to the next stage.
The clothespins are also essential.Leave a comment:

Thanks for the tip on eyes del! Greatly appreciated. I was using the smallest brush I had to try and dot the eyes, with less than satisfactory results and very little control over the final results. For the eye dots, what are you using? I like to use a sharpened toothpick, or if I'm adding the tiny highlight, the tip of a pin. Neither one works the best for strokes, but with practice they make great dots. I'm currently trying small lengths of fishing line in place of a brush for eyelashes.

I'm going to have to white out these eyes again and start over with the pin and toothpick.
Looking at the customs I own that were painted by guys like BLeit, Chris DMV, Random Axe and others, I'm just amazed at what a steady hand they must have to place such tiny dots exactly where they are supposed to go.Last edited by samurainoir; Jun 29, '10, 5:03 PM.Leave a comment:

I really need to do this with my custom pile as well. Congratulations on getting to work on yours!
Has anyone ever tried making their own eyebrow stencil? I simply don't have a steady enough hand to make eyebrows or other small brush details and I thought stencils might be the way to go for making nice crisp lines on a small face detail like that.Leave a comment:
