This discussion seems more like a haggling session on "Pawn Stars". Collectibles are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them. Period. No matter how much YOU or I LOVE something that doesn't mean that everyone or anyone else does and thus our perceived value is skewed.

I really think it's counter productive to judge others here for what they buy. This place should be a shelter from that.

Our preferences and spending habits already don't jive with the real world, let's not do it to ourselves.

For example, I wouldn't pay more than 100 bucks for a Hot Toys figure but I'm sure not going to ridicule those that purchase them, what a glass house I live in as it is.

And PLEASE, for the love of Mike, let's spare the boards another "Flatt vs us" debate, it's a tired, sad joke of an argument from 1998. The real guy is so likable, he'd be your new best friend in an hour and I'm sure he'd love everyone's work. You're all pretty, let's leave it at that.

            You're spot on.

And just to clarify...I personally wasn't trying to start a debate of Flatt vs. Them -- I love Flatt's work. I have several of his figures. He will always be the unofficial customizing "king" in my book. I was just pointing out that the prices that Flatt got in the 90's are not there now in reference to the current auctions that were posted.

Wasn't calling anyone specifically, especially you Derek. I've just seen enough of this debate to know it's pointless and serves no purpose.

Fortunately I've never been bitten by the Flatt bug. They could put a huge dent in a collector's bank account. Theres no doubt he was way ahead of his time. He also influenced a ton of customizers whose work has also become sought after. The prices on his figures has definitely decreased. So has the price on rare original Mego stuff. Like Flatt's those are limited to the one's in existence since no other "originals" will be made. As other people's work improved and more people were making custom figures the demand didn't support the price. I'm sure there are newer members who love customs and have never heard of Charlie Flatt, yet are completely familiar with any number of the customisers on this board. I would hardly say the price was insane. That might be a bit harsh. People value things differently, especially things they covet. I'm sure we've all purchased things others would look at and never spend that amount on. I collect Mego figures and have never been able to pull the trigger on any of the alter egos. Just can't spend it. Yet I recently made a purchase at a live auction that could have netted me at least 2, maybe 3 on a good day. My wife almost died when I bid it but I wanted it, so I got it. We all could be called insane at points in our collecting careers.
It's not a doll it's an action figure.

A few Flatt collections have gone up for sale this year that I know of. Two of the sellers offered what I would consider to be current fair market prices for the majority of their pieces (in the $100-$700 range). I was able to pick up a few and helped some other collectors along the way. They also had some rarities that fetched more (some WAY more). The current ebay seller seems a bit overpriced in light of that. However, it's always easier to lower your price than raise it. If I bought these figures back in the day for $1,000+, I'd probably test the selling waters on the high side, too. However, like stocks... the price for these collectibles fluctuates.

I think he'll have the best chance of selling the Joker at a higher price.

I sure wished I could buy some Flatt customs back in the '90's but I just couldn't afford them. After a while, I lost interest. But hearing that some are selling for under $200 has almost got me interested again.

I managed a bunch for fairly reasonable prices back in the day. They were nice but I prefered less detail in my mego stuff and sold them to a very happy camper for like, $225 each. I think I had Dr Strange, Vision, Red Skull, Superman and a couple others as I started brokering them for a guy.

All i have to say is ALL HAIL FLATT!!! lol j/k

I think Palitoy is right on with his comments.

It's only worth what somebody is willing to pay for it. That goes with just about everything in life.

BUT when people have to constantly take shots at the people who do or pay for things in a different way than they do, I think it takes away from the enjoyment of collecting.

                        Lets say:

What if every time someone made a custom that isn't the same scale as an original 8 inch Mego.
Then someone on this site takes a shot at it, I think some people on here would be annoyed! Wouldn't you say that?

I think Chuck is absolutely right that there is a new base of collectors that have come into the hobby recently or even the past few years that have no idea who Flatt is. This is the joy of ReMego... that we get some fresh blood into the Mego world that will pay the current retail average of $25 bucks for a brand new figure. That enjoyment may or may not expand to higher priced vintage or customs. The conversation is worth having because there are folks who might not understand the history of Flatt and why there are folks willing to pay a higher premium for a figure that he created.

I don't think there is any doubt that a Flatt hand-made custom is a collectible object, and has a base of fans. It's no use debating "worth" or what any individual would or would not pay for a piece, but it is interesting to look at the trends and market watch what his pieces are going for, and can help inform folks who might be interested in picking up Flatt customs and want to know what current market value is.

Keeping in mind that it's we are in difficult economic times, and Flatt's are more likely to appeal to a demographic that has been in the hobby longer than others.

In terms of recent history of Flatt on eBay...

This Batman stand sold for $32.50

This Hobgoblin sold with a best offer...

and these did not sell at the prices listed, and have been relisted a couple of times...
